He was watching for kids rushing out from between parked cars and slowed down when he thought he saw something. As his car passed, no child came out, but a brick sailed out and—WHUMP! —it hit the Jag’s shiny black side door! B Born with easy-broken bone disease, Zhang Yonghong is only half a meter tall and must use a wheelchair. His thin arms and legs can hardly support any weight, and he is unable to take care of himself. However, his hands are able to produce fine paper-cuts, which will free his daughter from the same disease. To support himself, he learned how to make pap er-cut art from his mother. He sold his artwork and taught his techniques in Xi’an for eight years before discovering his young daughter inherited the disease from him, leading Zhang to move his family to Beijing for his daughter’s better treatment five years ago. The daughter’s treatment costs about 30,000 yuan a year. C Planning a visit to the UK? Here we help with ways to cut your costs. AVOID BIG EVENTS Big sporting events, concerts and exhibitions can increase the cost of hotel expense and make it harder to find a room. A standard double room at the Thistle Brighton on the final Friday of the Brighton Comedy Festival (19 Oct.) cost ?169.15 at Booking.com. A week later, the same room cost ?118.15. If you want to know dates to avoid—or you’re looking for a big event to pass your time—check out sites such as Whatsonwhen.com, which allow you to search for events in the UK by city, date and category. STAYAWAY FROM THE STATION If traveling to your destination by train, you may want to find a good base close to the station, but you could end up paying more because of convenience at the start of your holiday. To pour oil on troubled waters “To pour oil on troubled waters” means trying to calm things down. Oil is lighter than water. If a ship is in trouble at sea, another ship may come to help it. The second ship can send small boats to rescue people. However, it may first pour oil on the sea to make the sea less rough. B. A bird in hand is worth two in the bush If I’m a hunter, trying to catch birds, it’s better to catch one bird than to see two birds in a bush but not be able to catch them. In our school we nearly have two examinations each week. Our teachers often tell us it is very important to have various kinds of examinations. But I don’t quite agree with them. In my opinion, it is necessary to have an exam sometimes. Because it can help us whether we have mastered what the teachers taught or not. However, too many examinations do us no good in any case. With two examinations each week we have to be busy preparing for them every day. How can we find any time to see a good film, do some sports or just rest? On the other hand, I don’t think that is the only way to improve our studies. Dear editor, don’t you agree with me? A reader
