Unit 5 A Piece of Advice

Para. 1 of Text A

All through school we’re taught to read, write, and speak; we’re never taught to listen. But while listening may be the most undervalued(低估;低估价值) of all the communication skills, good managers are likely to listen more than they speak. Perhaps that’s why God gave us two ears and only one mouth.

Unit 5 A Piece of Advice

Para. 2 of Text A

Some of the most successful managers are also the best listeners. I remember one manager in particular(尤其, 特别). He had been hired by a large corporation to assume the role of(担任) sales manager. But he knew absolutely nothing about the specifics of the business.

Unit 5 A Piece of Advice

Paras. 3-4 of Text A

When salespeople would go to him for answers, there wasn’t anything he could tell them because he didn’t know anything! Nonetheless, this man really knew how to listen. So no matter what they would ask him, he’d answer, “What do you think you ought to do?” They’d come up with2 the solution; he’d agree; and they’d leave satisfied. They thought he was fantastic(wonderful).

Unit 5 A Piece of Advice

Unit 5 A Piece of Advice
Para. 5 of Text A

He taught me this valuable listening technique, and I’ve been applying it ever since. Recently one of our consultants(顾问) came to me to discuss her marital(婚姻的) problems. She asked my advice as to3 whether she should divorce her husband. Since I didn’t even know the man, and hardly knew her, there was no way I could give her advice. All I did was listen, nod my head and ask, “What do you think you ought to do?” I asked her that several times, and each time she went on to4 tell me what she thought she should do. The next day I received a beautiful bouquet(bunch) of flowers with a lovely note thanking me for my terrific(wonderful, brilliant) advice. Then, about a year later, she wrote to tell me that her marriage was wonderful, and again my advice was credited(recognized)!

Unit 5 A Piece of Advice

Para. 6 of Text A

Many of the problems I hear don’t require me to offer solutions. I solve most of them by just listening and letting the grieving party(感到伤心的一方) do the talking. If I listen long enough, the person will generally come up with an adequate(satisfactory, 圆满的,适当的) solution.

Grieved

Unit 5 A Piece of Advice

Para. 7 of Text A

Several years ago a friend of mine purchased a small manufacturing company at a bargain price. The previous owner said, “I’m glad to get rid of5 it. My employees have become very militant(very unfriendly好斗的,激进的), and they just don’t appreciate all I’ve done for them over the years. They’re going to vote for6 a union any day now, and I don’t want to deal with those union people(工会里的人).”

After he became the owner, my friend conducted an open meeting with his total staff. “I want you all to be happy,” he told them. “Tell me what I can do to make that happen.” As it turned out7, he only had to provide a few minor conveniences: modern bathroom fixtures(facilities设施), larger mirrors in the locker rooms(更衣间), and vending machines8 for the recreation area. These were the only things they wanted. As a result, the union was never voted in9, and today everyone is content. All they really wanted was someone to listen to them.

Unit 5 A Piece of Advice

Unit 5 A Piece of Advice

Para. 9 of Text A

Listening is an art. And the first tenet(principle) of the skill is paying undivided attention10 to the other party. When someone enters my office to speak with me, I don’t allow anything to distract my attention. If I’m talking to someone in a crowded room, I try to make that person feel as though11 we’re the only ones present. I shut out12 everything else.

Unit 5 A Piece of Advice

Unit 5 A Piece of Advice
Para. 10 of Text A

I look directly at the person. Even if a gorilla(大猩猩) were to walk into the room, I probably wouldn’t notice it. I remember how offended I once was when I was having lunch with my sales manager, and every time a pretty waitress walked by(walk past me), his eyes would follow her across the room. I felt insulted and kept thinking to myself13, “That waitress’ legs are more important to him than what I have to say. He’s not listening to me. He doesn’t care about14 me!” You’ve got to pay attention in order to hear what the other person is saying. Without discipline(控制力,约束力) and concentration, our minds wander.

Unit 5 A Piece of Advice

Unit 5 A Piece of Advice

Para. 11 of Text A

People can also be distracted by their own petty prejudices(小偏见). For instance, a person may use some expression(表达) that you don’t like. Or perhaps you are irritated by(对… I know Southerners who can’t stand a New York accent, and I’ve met New Yorkers who feel the same way about a Southern

drawl(拖音).
Consequently, they allow something this insignificant to distract from the value of another person’s thoughts.

Unit 5 A Piece of Advice

Unit 5 A Piece of Advice

Para. 12 of Text A

Often people feel uneasy whenever there’s a pause in the conversation. They feel compelled to rush in and start talking. Perhaps if they would remain quiet, the other person might clarify or provide additional information. Sometimes it’s good for both parties to keep quiet for a few moments to think. A conversation interrupted by(被打断) silence can be a welcome relief. In fact, nonstop(直达的,一口气说个不停的) conversation may be an indication that something is seriously wrong.

Unit 5 A Piece of Advice

Unit 5 A Piece of Advice

Para. 13 of Text A

Many managers make the mistake of creating a bossemployee relationship(主雇关系) between themselves and their people — like student to teacher. However, while it is true that a teacher generally stands at the head of15 the class and does most of the talking, a good teacher also knows how to listen attentively(专心地). So does a good manager. To play an authoritarian(专制的) role16 with a subordinate(下属) establishes a “we-they” adversary(对立的) relationship. Effective communication breaks down(破裂,失效), and nobody listens!
15.在…的最前面=the front of 16.

Unit 5 A Piece of Advice
