9A Unit3 Asia Grammar Teaching aims: Learn “although” ,”unless” and “so that” To use ?although? to introduce a clause To use ?unless? to talk about exceptional conditions To use ?so that? to talk about the purpose of doing something Teaching important and difficult points: Learn the usage of “although” ,”unless” and “so that” How to use them correctly Teaching Procedures: Step 1 Greetings Step 2 Presentation Read the example sentences at the top of Page 43. Encourage students to ask questions if there is anything they do not understand. Explain to students that we can use ?although? to join two parts of a sentence. It means ?in spite of the fact?. We never use ?but? in a sentence with ?although?. Explain to the context. Mr Wu is explaining why he did not enjoy his trip to Singapore. Remind them that ?although? is followed by a subject and a verb. Ask students to join the two parts of each sentence using ?although?. When the students have finished, ask some of them to read out the sentences. Check the answers. 1. Although it rained heavily, it was still hot. 2. I got hot and sweaty although I walked slowly. 3. Although there was a train every five minutes, it was still very crowded. 4. I still got lost although I read my map carefully. 5. Although I ate healthily every day, I got ill. 6. I still felt very tired although I slept well. 7. Although people there were friendly, I missed Beijing. At last work out the rule. 注:although 意思相当于 though(尽管,虽然),用来引导让步状语从句。它 所引导的从句不能与并列连词 but,and,so 等连用,但可以和 yet,still 等词连 用。如:①Although the book was old, we decided to buy it.尽管这本书很旧,我 们还是决定买。②There is air all around us, although we cannot see it.虽然我们看 见空气,空气却存在于我们的周围。③Although Princeton has a world-famous university, it is still a small quiet town.普林斯顿虽然有一所世界闻名的大学, 但仍 然是个安静的小镇。 Step 3 Presentation Some students will probably know the word ?unless? although they may not

know exactly when or how to use it. Test students? knowledge of ?unless? by asking them to complete the following sentence: ?I will come to school tomorrow unless …?(e.g. ?…I?m sick, It is a public holiday…?) Ask a student to read the grammar rules and examples at the top of Page44. Ask students to raise their hands if they have any questions. Emphasize the use of ?unless to introduce exceptional conditions. For ordinary conditions, we use ?if ? instead, e.g. ?I will watch TV if I finish my homework before 7:30p.m.? Ask students to finish the exercise on Page44. Encourage them to do the exercise on their own. When the students have finished, ask six of them to read an answer each. Tell students they should read the full sentence, not just the letter of an answer. Then ask students to complete the ?Work out the rule? on their own. 注:unless 是从属连词,引导条件状语从句,含有否定意义,相当于 if 条 件状语从句的否定形式。所以 unless = if not。注意:unless 引导的条件状语从 句和 if 条件状语从句,与其它时间状语从句一样,用一般现在时代替将来时。 Unless: conj. 除非, 如果不. Eg: 1. Unless you take more care, you?ll have an accident. (如果不多加小心的话,你会出事故的。) 2. My baby sister never cries unless she is hungry. (我那刚出生的妹妹除非饿了,否则她是从来不哭的。) 3. Don?t promise anything unless you?re 100 per cent sure. (不要作任何的许诺, 除非你有百分百的把握。) 4. Unless bad weather stops me, I jog every day. (除非坏天气作梗,每天我都慢跑。) Step 4 Presentation Ask students the following questions, e.g., You get up early every morning. What’s your purpose? You go to school. What’s your purpose? You love playing basketball. What’s your purpose? Encourage students to answer the questions orally. Write students? answers on the blackboard, e.g. I will not be late for school. I can learn knowledge. I can make friends. Then combine the two sentences by using ?so that?. I get up early every morning so that I will not be late for school. I go to school so that I can learn knowledge. I love playing basketball so that I can make friends. Explain to students that we use ?so that? to talk about the purpose of doing

something. Tell students that we usually use verbs such as ?can?, ?will?, ?could?, or ?may? after ?so that?. Ask students to complete ?work out the rule?. Remind the students that we use? so that? to talk about the purpose of doing something and that we use ?so… that …? to talk about the result of something. Step 5 Practice Explain the context. Millie?s mother is asking Millie about the American exchange student, Kevin. Students must help Millie answer these questions. Ask students first to make two sentences out of the words provided. Remind students that one sentence should talk about doing something and the other should talk about the purpose of doing it. Then ask them to use ?so that? to join the two sentences. If they have some difficulties, they can work in pairs. Once students have finished, ask two students to role-play the completed conversation. Listen for mistakes and mispronunciation. 注:1. so that 引导目的状语从句时,表示"以便;为了",从句中常使用 can /could /may /might /will /would /should 等情态动词或助动词;引导结果状语从句 时,从句中一般不用 can 和 may 等词,在 so that 前可以用逗号,意思是\"因此; 所以\"。 The little boy saved every coin so that he could buy his mother a present on Mother's day. She bought a digital camera online so that she would save a lot of time. They came late so that they missed the early bus. 2. so+形容词或副词+that ...引导结果状语从句。 so+形容词或副词+that ...引导的肯定的结果状语从句,意思是 "如此...... 以致于...... "。 When the football fans saw Beckham, they got so excited that they cried out. so+形容词或副词+that ...引导的否定的结果状语从句,意思是 "如此...... 以致于不能......" David was so careless that he didn't find the mistakes in his test paper. Step 6 Homework 教学板书 although unless so that

I wasn?t late for school although it rained heavily. I won?t go to the party unless I am invited. She raised her voice so that everyone could hear her.
