Unit 5 Nelson Mandela--- a modern hero Period 1 Warming up & Reading
Teaching goals: 1. Knowledge aims: Learn and master the new words and expressions in this period. hero,quality,willing,fight,peaceful,prison,prisoner,law,advise,continue, fee,passbook,youth,league,stage,vote,position,accept,violence,equal, in trouble,worry about,out of work,Youth League,as a matter of fact,blow up, put...in prison 2. Ability aims: (1)Talk about the heroes and the fine quality of great people to improve the students’ speaking ability. (2)Do reading practice to improve the students’ reading abilities. 3. Emotional aims: (1)Learn about some great people and qualities they have in common. (2)Develop the students’ moral quality and encourage them to be the hero of themselves.. Teaching important points: (1)Enable the students to grasp the main idea of the passage. (2)Improve the students’ reading ability by using different reading skills. Teaching difficult points: (1)How to express their own opinions and ideas. (2)How to grasp the main idea of a text or a passage. Teaching methods: Fast reading and careful reading; asking and answering activities to check the student’s understanding of the text; Individual ,pair and group work. Teaching aids: A micro-media room

Step1 Warming-up and Pre-reading
Free talk:Who is your hero/heroine? Why do you admire him/her? Brainstorming: What kinds of qualities(品质) are worth our admiration?

Step 2 Reading---Elias’ Story
1. Skimming Go through the text quickly to choose the main idea of the passage. A. Mandela led a fight against the white government. B. Mandela helped Elias and he trusted Mandela and helped to fight against the white government. C. Mandela helped Elias and they became good friends. 2. Scanning Go through the text quickly to find whether the following statements are true or false. 1. Elias met Nelson Mandela at school. 2. Nelson Mandela was a black lawyer. 3. Elias was unable to read or write because he was lazy. 4. Nelson Mandela helped him keep his job. 5. Nelson Mandela thought violence was a good way to help black people.

6. Elias was happy blowing up government buildings. 3. Careful reading Task 1 Read the passage paragraph by paragraph and find out Elias’ feeling. Para.1 Elias was to Mandela for his generosity of time. Para.2 Elias was to be out of work. Para.3 Elias felt about his future because of Mandela’s help. Para.4 Elias with what Mandela said about the black. Para.5 Elias was ___ to help though he didn’t like violence. Task 2 Read what Mandela said about the black people and solve the following questions. Mandela said: “The last 30 years has seen the greatest number of laws stopping our rights and progress, until today we have reached a stage where we have no rights at all.” “…we were put into a position in which we had either to accept we were less important, or fight the government. We chose to attack the laws. We first broke the law in a way which was peaceful; when this was not allowed…only then did we decide to answer violence with violence.” 1. Paraphrasing Paraphrase the following two sentences in your own words. a. The last 30 years has seen the greatest number of laws stopping our rights and progress. b. We were put into a position in which we had either to accept we were less important, or fight the government. 2. Answering questions a. What’s the situation of the black people at that time? b. In which ways did Mandela decide to break the law?

Step 3 Post-reading
Group work:Discussion and interview Discuss with your group member: What can you learn after reading the text? (You now have a chance to be interviewed. Tell the reporter your feeling or understanding about Elias, Nelson Mandela and/or the black people.)
