Volunteer work plays an important role in America’s high school education. A certain number of volunteer hours are a must for high schoolers. Great numbers of high school students are engaged in volunteer work for the purpose of having a promising future.
Volunteer work is a critical part of college applications In America, the perfect score is not the only factor to be considered in college admission which becomes more and more competitive. High school students are finding that whether they have impressive volunteer experience or not tends to be a key factor. Princeton University once enrolled a girl who successfully sold a large quantity of girl scout cookies (女童军饼干). Instead of selling cookies in front of supermarkets or from door to door, the girl walked into a big company and asked to see the CEO. Beginning from the good taste of her cookies, she explained how the money would be used to help poor children and how the company would benefit if he bought her cookies. At last, her courage and wisdom impressed both the CEO and Princeton University. Volunteering is a great preparation for future careers rather than picking a volunteer job randomly, some high school students choose activities based on potential careers or majors. Kymberly Bays is a high school graduate. Five days after she had received her high school diploma (毕业证书), she embarked(开始) on a journey to Africa for six weeks to be a volunteer teacher at a poor school. She also raised $1,000 through a part-time job to buy textbooks for the school. Since Kymberly wants to be a foreign news correspondent, she said the trip to Africa would help her learn more about adapting to foreign places and see how others live. 56. A great quantity of high school students who are engaged in volunteer work aims to ___________ A. have more work experience B. earn more money C. have a promising future D. learn about the society 57. To support her idea, the author develops the passage mainly by_________ A. listing reasons B. using quotation C. making comparisons D. giving examples 58. What does Kymberly Bays want to be in the future? A. A teacher B. A businessman C. A reporter D. A saleswoman B The Romantic Age was a time of great literary expansion and it provided writers a chance to truly speak from their soul to all readers. During the Romantic Age, there were many writers, but few who deserved recognition. Of these writers, there were Keats and Wordsworth. Both were alike, yet different in many ways.
William Wordsworth found that the best way to express his feelings through sonnet(十四行诗) was through a structure containing only one stanza（节）.Wordsworth compiled（汇编） everything together as if it were just spontaneous (自发的)thoughts written on a page. Also，Wordsworth used descriptive words to create a visual image of what he was describing. Wordsworth looked at the beauty of nature and its permanence, described it with great detail, and with that created poems that became images in the Romantic Age. John Keats, however, felt that several stanzas were necessary to completely get his feelings onto paper. He looked at nature as if it were a work of art. He also felt that what was left unsaid was even more powerful than what was actually spoken. Although Keats did not think of nature as beauty and permanence like Wordsworth, he still created the poem format(格式) that gained much respect in the Romantic Age.
There were many differences in the poems of Keats and Wordsworth. However, there were also many similarities. Personification （拟人） was used through many poems , especially the poems of Keats and Wordsworth. But along with personification, one aspect of the poems that stood out was the comparison of lifeless objects to women or a woman’s features. The Romantic Age provided a time for Keats and Wordsworth to expand on all that they had in their hearts. Though there were many differences in their techniques, they had the same passion for writing. With this passion, they created poems which are always remembered, and are often quoted when learning about the Romantic Age in literature. 59. One of the differences between Wordsworth and Keats lied in _________ A. how to express the feelings B. how to describe nature C. the passion for writing D. the effect of their poems 60. What was John Keats’ opinion about nature? A. It was a visual image.

The use of personification C. The techniques they used D. The format of their poems 62. The author writes the passage in order to _______ A. introduce the Romantic Age to readers B. describe the contributions of Wordsworth and Keats C. guide us how to read Wordsworth’s and Keats’ poems D. compare Wordsworth’s and Keats’ literary features C Some weird(古怪), wild and wonderful stories colored the news in 2010: ★A Copenhagen bus company has put "love seats" on 103 of its vehicles for people looking for a partner．"Even love at first sight is possible on the bus," said a spokesman for the British Arriva company to explain the two seats on each bus that are covered in red cloth and a "love seat" sign． ★Shoppers at an international luxury（奢侈的） fair in Verona, Italy, found a cell-phone-equipped golden coffin among the items on display．The phones will help "the dead" contact relatives if they have been buried alive by mistake． ★A man in New York came up with a disarming way to set off his latest bank heist, approaching the clerk’s window with a large bunch of flowers and handing over a hold-up note saying “give me the money!” ★ An Englishman who lost all his legs and arms in an electrical accident successfully swam across the Channel, a challenge he had been preparing for two years．The whole cost is 400 dollars． ★A set of artificial teeth made for Britain's war-time prime minister Winston Churchill known as "the teeth that saved the world" sold for nearly 18,000 pounds （21,500 euros, 24,000 dollars） at auction（拍卖） ．

Britain is suffering through its longest cold snap(寒潮) since 1981. And freezing weather is hitting the US south. Whatever happened to global warming? Such weather doesn't seem to fit with warnings from scientists that the Earth is warming because of greenhouse gases. But experts say the coldness doesn't deny global warming at all - it's just a blip in the long-term heating trend. "It's part of natural variability," said Gerald Meehl, a senior scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo. With global warming, he said, "we'll still have record cold temperatures. We'll just have fewer of them." Scientists say man-made climate change does have the potential to cause more frequent and more severe weather extremes, such as heat waves, storms, floods, droughts and even coldness. But experts did not connect the current cold weather to climate change. So what is going on? "We basically have seen just a big outbreak of Arctic air over populated areas of the Northern Hemisphere”, Arndt said. In the atmosphere, large rivers of air travel roughly west to east around the globe between the Arctic and the tropics. But 高二英语 into a pronounced recently, this air flow has become bent第 8 页，共 14 页 a “z” pattern, moving from north and south. If you live in a place where it brings air up from the south, you get warm weather. In fact, record highs were reported this week in Washington state and Alaska. But in some other unlucky parts of the globe, Arctic air is moving down from the north. And that's how you get the low temperature in Beijing, and 18 inches of snow
in parts of Britain, where a member of Parliament who said the snow "clearly indicates a cooling trend" was laughed at by colleagues. The “z” pattern arises naturally from time to time, but it is not clear why it's so strong right now, said Michelle L'Heureux, a meteorologist at the Climate Prediction Center of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The center says the pattern should begin to weaken in a week or two. 67. Many areas are suffering low temperature except_______ A. Beijing B. Washington state and Alaska C. the US south D. Britain 68. The present coldness is probably caused by_________ A. climate change B. Arctic air traveling west to east C. the “z” pattern Arctic air flow D. the cooling trend 69. Cheats. 听力文本： Text 1 W: let’s order take-out. It’s too cold to go out for lunch. M: Good. I’ll do that after I finish the newspaper. Text 2 W: Do you know what Joho does after dinner every day? M: Yes, he spends three quarters of an hour jogging and half an hour jumping rope. Text 3 W: Peter, let’s go . I want to buy some candy at the store before it closes. M: I can’t go with you today. I have to finish my homework here. My parents are working overtime, and I didn’t take my house keys. Text 4 W: Have some more steak, Charles! M: Thank you, Lydia, but if I eat one more bite, I think I’ll explode! Text 5 W: You always read at home on weekends. We haven’t been to a movie in nearly half a year.
M: But there aren’t any good movies out now. Nothing can compare to reading books. You should be a writer since you like book so much. Text 6 W: Now, look. I do understand the rules, but I’ m in a hurry. If I want to catch my flight, I just have to get on this train. M: Well, you’ll have to go back to buy a ticket. W: I can’t do that with this heavy luggage! Can’t I get a ticket on the train? M: Yes, but there will be an extra charge. W: Well, I’ve got no choice, but I don’t think it’s fair. Text 7 W: Hi, David. I haven’t seen you in over four months. Have you lost weight? M: Yeah, I’ve been on a diet for the last three months. W: well, how is it going? M: It’s OK, I guess. I also joined a health club and I exercise there every day. I managed to lose 15 Pounds in two months. W: That’s amazing! What tips did your trainer give you? M: The best advice I got was to change my eating habits. Instead of eating 3 times a day, he told me to eat 5 times a day. W: If you eat more, then, how can you lose weight? M: Actually I eat 5 smaller meals a day. W: Well, that makes sense. I’m going to try that. M: Good luck. Text 8 W: A large amount of waste is thrown away every day, including home appliances, plastic, paper, and construction materials. Throwing these things away is bad for the environment. They should be recycled. M: You’re right. I read in the newspaper that more and more recycling centers are being built in our city. Waste is gathered, sorted, and transported out of the city to be recycled. W: Where is the waste sent? M: Well, if you are interested, I have a lot of books about waste treatment. You could come over to my house to read them with me, and then you could go to some recycling centers to do a survey. W: That sounds good. What a great topic for my midterm paper! I’ll write
about waste treatment! M: I’m sure you’ll do a great job. Text 9 M: You really don’t like Fellini? Or Kurosawa ? W: No, not at all. M: How abut Bergman? You must like his films. W: I’m afraid not. I don’t like any of his films. M: Oh, come on! Those men are the greatest directors in modern cinema. I mean, really…… W: I told you, I think they’re boring. I can’t stand them. M: Well, what movies do you like? W: I like horror movies, as a matter of fact. M: Horror movies? You’re kidding! I mean, you can’t be serious. Horror movies? They’re so violent, so bloody, so, so, so… scary. W: Well you’re obviously missing the point. You see, in horror movies you’ve got a classic conflict between the forces of good and the forces of evil. M: I just can’t believe I’m hearing this. I suppose you’ll tell me that you love heavy metal next. W: No, I don’t. I love classical music. M: You do? So do I, but I’ll never watch a horror movie.
