He was watching for kids rushing out from between parked cars and slowed down when he thought he saw something. As his car passed, no child came out, but a brick sailed out and—WHUMP! —it hit the Jag’s shiny black side door! Immediately Josh stopped the car, jumped out, seized the kid and pushed him up against a parked car. He shouted at the kid, “What was that all about and who are you? That’s my new Jag, that brick you threw is gonna cost you a lot of money. Why did you throw it? ” “Please, mister, please. . . I’m sorry! B Born with easy-broken bone disease, Zhang Yonghong is only half a meter tall and must use a wheelchair. His thin arms and legs can hardly support any weight, and he is unable to take care of himself. However, his hands are able to produce fine paper-cuts, which will free his daughter from the same disease. To support himself, he learned how to make pap er-cut art from his mother. He sold his artwork and taught his techniques in Xi’an for eight years before discovering his young daughter inherited the disease from him, leading Zhang to move his family to Beijing for his daughter’s better treatment five years ago. The daughter’s treatment costs about 30,000 yuan a year. The family’s savings was used up in two years, and Zhang was forced to start to sell his work in underground passages with his healthy wife, who soon left him because of the hard life. With a little help from government, he was lucky to meet some kindhearted people in Beijing. A Hong Kong businessman gave 60,000 yuan to him last year to treat the girl and start a small shop on Qiangulouyuan, which is known as a famous hutong that attracts lots of tourists over holidays. Zhang Rui, a university graduate, spends most of her time helping Zhang sell the paper-cuts, translating the stories of the paper-cuts into English and selling the works on the roadside of Nanluoguxiang. However, the artist still lives beyond his income (收入) and struggles to continue his small business. “Selling paper-cuts is his only source of income. C Planning a visit to the UK? Here we help with ways to cut your costs. AVOID BIG EVENTS Big sporting events, concerts and exhibitions can increase the cost of hotel expense and make it harder to find a room. A standard double room at the Thistle Brighton on the final Friday of the Brighton Comedy Festival (19 Oct.) cost ?169.15 at Booking.com. A week later, the same room cost ?118.15. If you want to know dates to avoid—or you’re looking for a big event to pass your time—check out sites such as Whatsonwhen.com, which allow you to search for events in the UK by city, date and category. STAYAWAY FROM THE STATION If traveling to your destination by train, you may want to find a good base close to the station, but you could end up paying more because of convenience at the start of your holiday. Don’t be too choosy about the part of town you stay in. Booking two months ahead

of time, the cheapest room at Travelodge’s Central

Euston hotel in London for

Saturday 22 September was ?95.95. A room just a tube journey away at its Covent Garden hotel was ?75.75. And at Farringdon, a double room cost just ?62.95. LOOK AFTER YOURSELF Really central hotels in cities such as London, Edinburgh and Cardiff can cost a fortune, especially at weekends and during big events. So it will be a good choice to consider checking into a self-cooking flat with its own kitchen. Often these flats are hidden away on the top floors of city centre buildings. A great example is the historic O’Neill Flat on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, available for ?420 for five days in late September, with room for four adults. GET ON A BIKE London’s ‘Boris bikes’ have attracted the most attention, but other cities also have similar programmes that let you rent a bicycle and explore at your own pace, saving you on public transport or car parking costs. Among the smaller cities with their own programmes are Newcastle (casual members pay around ?1.50 for two hours) and Cardiff (free for up to 30 minutes, or ?5 per day). 46.The Brighton Comedy Festival is mentioned mainly to show big events may______. A. help travelers pass time C. allow travelers to make flexible plans hotel expense 47.“Farringdon” in Paragraph 5 is most probably __________. A. a hotel away from the train station C. an ideal holiday destination B. the tube line to Covent Garden D. the name of a travel agency B. attract lots of travelers to the UK D. cause travelers to pay more for

48.The passage shows that the O’Neill Flat __________. A. lies on the ground floor B. is located in central London C. provides cooking facilities for tourists D. costs over ?100 on average per day in late September 49.Cardiff’s program allows a free bike for a period of __________ at most. A. half an hour B. one hour C. one hour and a half D. two hours

50.The main purpose of the passage is __________. A. to tell visitors how to book in advance B. to supply visitors with hotel information C. to show visitors the importance of self-help D. to offer visitors some money-saving tips

第二节:根据短文内容,从下框的 A~G 项中选出能概括每一段主题的最佳选项,选项中有两 项为多余项。(共 5 小题;每小题 1 分,满分 5 分) 51.Mr. and Mrs. Smith had a quarrel. Their friend Mr. Brown went to talk to them. When he came back, he told his wife that he had been trying to help the Smiths. 52.Mr. Wang paid for a new school. Some people did not like the design of the school but they agreed with Mr. Wang. 53.Mr. Brown had quite a good job in Hong Kong. But he thought a job in Singapore would be better. His wife didn’t want him to leave his job in Hong Kong. She reminded him to give up this idea. 54.Jenny formed the habit of getting up late during summer holiday. She was scolded for being late on her first day of new term. She then promised that sort of thing would never happen again. 55. The 7-year-old Marie got a nice CD player as her birthday gift. And she was unwilling to let others use it at any time even though it was not used at all by herself. A. To pour oil on troubled waters “To pour oil on troubled waters” means trying to calm things down. Oil is lighter than water. If a ship is in trouble at sea, another ship may come to help it. The second ship can send small boats to rescue people. However, it may first pour oil on the sea to make the sea less rough. B. A bird in hand is worth two in the bush If I’m a hunter, trying to catch birds, it’s better to catch one bird than to see two birds in a bush but not be able to catch them. Thus this means that what you have already got is better than the chance of being able to get something bigger in the future.
-9-

C. He who pays the pipe calls the tune A pipe is a musician. The man who employs or pays a musician can say what tunes the man will play. Thus this means that if a man provides the money for a plan, he can say how it will be carried out. D. Once bitten, twice shy If a dog bites me, I shall be twice as careful in future when I see it. This proverb is applied to many things and not only to dogs. If you have been cheated at a shop, you will not go to the same shop again. E. You can’t get blood out of a stone “You can’t get blood out of a stone” means that you can’t get something from a person who has not got any of the things you want. For example, you can’t expect a million dollars from a poor man. F. Don’t be a dog in a manger This means “don’t be selfish”. In a stable, the manger is the place where the horse’s food is put. Sometimes a dog will sleep in the manger and bark when a horse comes to get its food. The dog doesn’t want to eat the hay in the manger and bark when a horse eat it. G. A young idler, an old beggar. It goes without saying that the youth is the best time of life, during which one's mental and physical states are at their peaks. It takes relatively less time and pains to learn or accept new things in a world full of changes and rapid developments. In addition, one is less likely to be under great pressure from career, family and health problems when young.

In our school we nearly have two examinations each week. Our teachers often tell us it is very important to have various kinds of examinations. But I don’t quite agree with them. In my opinion, it is necessary to have an exam sometimes. Because it can help us whether we have mastered what the teachers taught or not. However, too many examinations do us no good in any case. With two examinations each week we have to be busy preparing for them every day. How can we find any time to see a good film, do some sports or just rest? On the other hand, I don’t think that is the only way to improve our studies. Dear editor, don’t you agree with me? A reader
