While other kids ate candy for breakfast, I had to have cereal, eggs and toast. Others had cokes and candy for lunch, while we had to eat a sandwich. As you can guess, my supper was different than the other kids’. But at least I was not alone in my suffering. My sister and two brothers had the same mean mother as I did. My mother insisted on knowing where we were at all times. She had to know who our friends were and what we were doing. We had to wear clean clothes every day. Other kids always wore their clothes for days. We reached the height of disgrace because she made our clothes herself, just to save money. The worst is yet to come. We had to be in bed by 9:00 each night and up at 7:45 the next morning. So while my friends slept, my mother actually had the courage to break Child Labor Law. She made us work. I believed she lay awake all night thinking up mean things to do to us. Through the years, our friends’ report cards had beautiful colors on them, black for passing, red

The 15-year-old boy and his father were in the water off Avalon,on Sydney's northern beaches, around dawn when he was attacked. The city's beaches are packed with locals and tourists during the summer months. “The father heard a scream and turned to see his son thrashing(激烈扭动)about in the water, ”police said. “Fortunately, shark swam away and the boy was helped to the shore by his the father.” Lifesaving Club spokesman Nick Miller said,“It got him around the top of his left leg and the father came and dragged him out of water.” He said the boy was bleeding heavily when he was brought to the shore. “There was a lot of pain,as you can imagine. ”The teenager was airlifted to hospital for treatment for leg injuries. the shark, while police hoped to identify its species by the shape of the bite marks. But they said it was too early to say what type of shark attacked the boy. “I don't even know if he saw it,”Miller said. Many shark species live in the waters off Sydney's beaches, but attacks on humans are still relatively rare. However, there were two attacks on successive days earlier this month, one on a navy diver in Sydney harbor, not far from the famous Opera House, and the other on a surfer at the city's world-famous Bondi beach. Fishermen say shark numbers are on the rise. There is a ban on commercial fishing in the harbor, which has increased fish stocks. Marine experts also claim environmental protection has created a cleaner environment, attracting sharks closer to the shore as they chase fish. Many shark species, including the Great White—the maneaters made famous in Steven Spielberg's Jaws—are protected in Australian waters. 31.The report mainly tells us ________. After I started to go to high school, Lili and I were too busy to communicate much with each other. In biology class I began to be depressed. When the teacher showed us a picture of a butterfly, I was scared and screamed. I had a vision of thousands of butterflies flying to ward me. That night I told Lili about it. The next morning, I saw that she had red eyes with black circles around them. She took me to see a therapist (治疗师). Three hours later, the therapist told Lili that my life was like a wheel spinning (旋转) faster and faster and that was the reason for what had happened to me. I only realized it when my body couldn’t stand the pressure anymore. At these words, Lili burst into tears. “It’s all my fault, she’s just a kid and I didn’t have time to take care of her….” To be honest, I had never seen Lili cry before. After that, Lili began to spend more time at home, cooking and dragging me to do sports. I realized she was the one who would always be there when I was in real trouble. Nobody knows for absolute certainty all the details of the life of Aesop. However, scholars have been working to established some facts and this is the brief story of Aesop as it is accepted today. Aesop was born a slave around the year 620 B.C. In Ancient Greece, it was a privilege and tradition of freedmen to be interested in public affairs, so Aesop worked hard to raise himself from a servile slave's position to a high position of renown. He was a thinker and philosopher and eventually became widely admired. Aesop was a smart man and a good speaker. He liked to learn and to also teach people, so he traveled through many countries. He came to Sardis, the capital of the famous king Croesus of Lydia who was a patron of learning and learned men. Croesus was so impressed by Aesop that he invited Aesop to permanently reside at Sardis. The king hired Aesop to do diplomatic government work such as trying to establish peace between the various republics of Greece. Aesop reconciled the inhabitants of these cities by telling his wise fables. It was on one of these ambassadorial missions that Aesop was killed. Croesus had sent him to Delphi with lots of gold which was to be distributed among the citizens. After talking with the people of Delphi, Aesop got so mad at the citizens because of their covetousness. He refused to divide the money and instead sent it back to his master. The Delphians were so mad they executed Aesop as a public criminal. As it often happens in Greek history, the Delphians were visited by a series of calamities as a sort of retribution for Aesop's death. This is where the phrase "the blood of Aesop" originated. The saying means "wrongful deeds will not go unpunished". In memory of Aesop, a statue was erected in Athens. The statue was created by the famous Greek sculptor, Lysippus. 41. Why did Aesop work so hard? A. Because he wanted to be an official. B. Because he desired to join in public affairs. C. Because he wanted to make more money. D. Because he wanted to write wise fables. 42. According to Paragraph 3, Aesop traveled through many countries to __________. A. spread knowledge B. seek help C. admire the scenery D. collect facts 43. Croesus hired Aesop to _______________. A. establish relations with other republics B. handle interal affairs of Lydia C. be in charge of his wealth D. publish the neighboring republics of Greece 44. Which of the following word can best describe Croesus? A. Strong-willed. B. Generous. C. Adventurous. D. Knowledgeable. 45. The phrase “the blood of Aesop” probably means “__________”. A. No pains, no gains. B. Well begun is half done. C. It’s no use crying over spilt milk. D. Wrongful deeds will not go unpunished. 第二节 信息匹配(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 阅读下列应用文及相关信息,并按照要求匹配信息。 首先, 请阅读下面招聘信息: A. A short, slim and weak girl like you should take such a job as her career! Do you know how worried I am? Do you still remember your dear Uncle Danny, my handsome and wise younger brother? The insightful and strong willed journalist honored in the press circle, was sent to report what was happening in the Middle East. He left with a strong sense of duty but never returned home. Dear Mum, How moved I am to receive your letter, from which I know your unselfish love for me. I know the reason you don’t want me to be a journalist is that Uncle Danny’ s death makes you worried about my safety. I can never do enough to repay your love. However, my dream is to be a journalist, because it is a noble job with a deep concern for society. A good journalist can go deep into society to cover the most shocking, exciting and amazing events, and also interview those who can benefit people and those who should be helped. It is a job with not only sweat but also the pleasure of its own. The real meaning of journalism is to work for the community and for the public cause. Journalists are capable of doing right to what is unfair. Mum, I know very well what a great challenge it is for me to be a journalist. It means less rest and more hard work. This is so harsh for a little girl like me. But such difficulty seems nothing to me when compared to a great cause of journalism. I can look after myself. Mum, please think about my idea. Yours, Jane
