When I first read this sentence from an American friend’s email, I laughed. I thought it was a perfect example of Chinglish. Obviously, it is a word-by-word literal translation of the Chinese greetings with a ruled English grammar and structure! Later on, my friend told me that it is a standard American greeting. I was too thrilled to believe her. Her words could not convince me at all. So I did a research on google.com. To my surprise, there are over 60 thousand web pages containing ―Long time no see.‖ This sentence has been widely used in emails, letters, newspapers, movies, books, or any other possible places. Though it is sort of informal, it is part of the language that Americans use daily. Ironically, if you type this phrase in Microsoft Word, the software will tell you that the grammar needs to be corrected. Nobody knows the origin of this Chinglish sentence. Some people

believe that it came from Charlie Chan’s movies. In the 1930s, Hollywood moviemakers successfully created a world wide famous Chinese detective named ―Charlie Chan‖ on wide screens. Detective Chan likes to teach Americans some Chines e wisdom by quoting Confucius. ―Long time no see‖ was his trademark. Soon after Charlie Chan, ―Long time no see‖ became a popular phrase in the real world with thanks to the popularity of these movies. Some scholars refer to America as a huge pot of stew. All kinds of culture are mixed in the stew together, and they change the color and taste of each other. American Chinese, though a minority ethnic(少数民族的成员) group in the United States, is also contributing some changes to the stew! Language is usually the first thing to be influenced in the mixed stew. You can have some other examples than adoptions from Chinese, such as pizza from Italian, susi from Japanese, and déjà vu from French etc. There is a long list! Americans do not just simply borrow something from others. They will modify it and make it their own, so you would not be surprised to find a tofu and peanut butter hamburger in a restaurant, or to buy a bottle of iced Chinese green tea with honey in a grocery store. Since Americans appreciate Chinese culture more and more nowadays, I believe more Chinese words will become American English in the future. In this way the American stew keeps adding richness and flavor. 51.The writer himself felt surprised at ______. A. the Chinglish expression ―Long time no see‖ B. ―Long time no see‖ used as standard American English C. so many literal translation of the expressions used in America D. finding out Americans use the expression every day 52.The word ―stew‖ in the 4th paragraph probably means ______. A. mixture literature B. Confucius’ words C. a kind of cooked dish D. American changing cultures 53.According to the passage, it can be inferred that ______. A. detectives translate the phrase ―Long time no see‖ B. Hollywood made ―Long time no see‖ popular B. ―Long time no see‖ used as standard American English D. cultures can be changed in the huge pot of stew 54.The main idea of the passage is that ______. A. some Chinese expressions are introduced into English B. you’ll not be surprised at a tofu in a restaurant in America C. some American expressions can be used in China D. American English keep being enriched from different cultures 55.According to the passage, which of the following statements is not true? A. Informal language sometimes doesn’t go with grammar and structure. B. Languages are always ruled by grammar and structure. C . Long time no see‖ has been used in at least four media mentioned in the

passage. D. There are four languages mentioned to be adopted in the American stew. D Biomass energy (生物能), often forgotten as promising alternative (替代 物)to oil , received its day in the sun with the gathering of the Bio-Energy World Congress and Exposition in Atlanta , Georgia , late in April , 1990 . Nearly 1700 scientists , businessmen , and policy-makers , one-quarter from the foreign nations, gathered for a week to discuss various means of squeezing usable energy out of trees , crops manure , seaweed , algae and urban waste . Biomass in the United States contributes 2.5 percent of the total supply , but this amount can be doubled by 2000 and then doubled again by the year 2010. Eight percent of Sweden’s energy supply , for example , is presently coming from wood bark and pulp remains . Sweden intends to raise this percentage by more intensive harvesting of waste food lying around in forests , and through the planting of so-called energy forests of fast-growing trees such as willow and birch . Brazil is frequently pointed to as a nation with a major successful investment (投资) in energy coming from grains : it presently runs 330,000 automobiles on a water and alcohol (酒精) mixture , replacing 10 percent of its previous oil supply . Brazilian representatives (代表) at the conference said they wish to double this in five years , with a final goal of total replacement . Most of the cars are built at the factory to use the mixture , while older models are changed through low-cost government programs . 56. In Line 2, the phrase received its day in the sun most probably means . A.came to the public mind B.had its turn in the sunlight C.was regarded as a solar energy D.came from the energy of the sun 57.Which of the following statements is supported by the passage ? A.1700 scientists attended the conference . B. A quarter of American businessmen were present at the conference . C.Foreign policy-makers accounted for a quarter . A.5% B.20% C.10% D.15% 59.Which of the following is not regarded as biomass energy ? A.Willow and seaweed . B.Wood and grains . C.Water and alcohol mixture . D.Crops and oil mixture . 60.A suitable title for this passage would be . A.An energy Conference B.Approval of Biomass Energy

C.Bio-Energy for Automobiles D.Keys to Energy Crisis E ―I’ve changed my mind . I wanted to have a telescope , but now I want my dad back .‖ Lucien Lawrence’s letter to Father Christmas written after his schoolteacher father had been knifed to death outside his school gate , must have touched every heart .Lucien went on to say that without his father he couldn’t see the stars in the sky . When those whom we love depart from us , we cannot see the stars for a while . But Lucien , the stars are still there , and one day , when you are older and your tears have gone , you will see them again. And , in a strange way , I expect that you will find your father is there too , in your mind and in your heart . I find that my parents , long dead now , still figure in many of my dreams and that I think of them perhaps more than I ever did when they were alive . I still live to please them and I’m still surprised by their reactions . I remember that when I became a professor , I was so proud , or rather so pleased with myself , that I couldn’t wait to cable my parents . The reply was a long time in coming , but when it did , all Mother said was ―I hope this means that now you will have more time for the children !‖ I haven’t forgotten . The values of my parents still live on . It makes me pause and think about how I will live on in the hearts and minds of my children and of those for whom I care . Would I have been as ready as Philip Lawrence have been to face the aggressors (挑衅者), and to lay down my life for those in my care ? How many people would want me back for Christmas ? It’s a serious thought , one to give me pause . I pray silently, sometimes , in the dead of night , that ancient cry of a poet ―Deliver my soul from the sword , and my darling from the power of the dog .‖ Yet I know the death comes to us all , and sometimes comes suddenly . We must therefore plan to live forever , but live as if we will die tomorrow . We live on , I’m sure , in the lives of those we loved , and therefore we ought to have a care for what they will remember and what they will treasure . If more parents knew this in their hearts to be true , there might be fewer knives on our streets today . 61 . According to the whole text we can see that the first paragraph .
