You don’t know about me if you haven’t read a book called The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.Mr. Mark Twain wrote the book and most of it is true.In that book robbers stole some money and hid it in a very secret place in the woods. But Tom Sawyer and I found it,and after that we were rich.We got six thousand dollars each— all gold. In those days I never had a home or went to school like Tom and all the other boys in St Petersburg.Pop was always drunk, and he moved around a lot,so he wasn’t a very good father. But it didn’t matter to me.I slept in the streets or in the woods, and I could do what I wanted, when I wanted. It was a fine life.

When we got all the money,Tom and I were famous for a while.Judge Thatcher, who was an important man in our town, kept my money in the bank for me. And the Widow Douglas took me to live in her house and said I could be her son.She was very nice and kind, but it was a hard life because I had to wear new clothes and be good all the time. In the end, I put on my old clothes and ran away. But Tom came after me and said that I had to go back, and that I could be in his gang of robbers. So, I went back, and the widow cried and I had to put on those new clothes again. I didn’t like it at all. Her sister, Miss Watson, lived there too.She was always saying,‘Don’t put your feet there,Huckleberry’,and ‘Don’t do that, Huckleberry.’It was terrible. 21.Which is right according to paragraph l? A. You can know “me” though you haven’t read the book. B. It was very easy for “me” to get the money. C. The book told the readers how “I” became rich. D. C. “I” was not concerned by others. D. “I” couldn’t live a stable life. 23.What can we infer from the passage? A. “I” felt at home living with Douglas. B. “I” could bear the limitations. C. Money brought me fame and happiness. D. “I” was longing for nature and freedom.

Getting rid of dirt, in the opinion of most people, is a good thing. However, there is nothing fixed about attitudes to dirt. In the early 16th century, people thought that dirt on the skin was a means to block out disease, as medical opinion had it that washing off dirt with hot water could open up the skin and let ills in. A particular danger was thought to lie in public baths. By 1538, the French king had closed the bath houses in his kingdom. So did the king of England in 1546. Thus began a long time when the rich and the poor in Europe lived with dirt in a friendly way. Henry IV, King of France, was famously dirty. Upon learning that a nobleman had taken a bath, the king ordered that, to avoid the attack of disease, the nobleman should not go out. Though the belief in the merit(优点) of dirt was long-lived, dirt has no longer been regarded as a nice neighbor ever since the 18th century. Scientifically speaking, cleaning away dirt is good to health. Clean water supply and hand washing are practical means of preventing disease. Yet, it seems that standards of cleanliness have moved beyond science since World War II. Advertisements repeatedly sell the idea: clothes need to be whiter than white, cloths ever softer, surfaces to shine. Has the hate for dirt, however, gone too far? Attitudes to dirt still differ hugely nowadays. Many first-time parents nervously try to warn their children off touching dirt, which might be responsible for the spread of disease. On the contrary, Mary Ruebush, an American immunologist (免疫学家), encourages children to play in the dirt to build up a strong immune system. And the latter position is gaining some ground.

24. The kings of France and England in the 16th century closed bath houses because ________. A. they lived healthily in a dirty environment. B. they thought bath houses were too dirty to stay in C. they believed disease could be spread in public baths D. they considered bathing as the cause of skin disease 25.Which of the following best describes Henry IV's attitude to bathing? A. Afraid B. Curious C. Approving 26. How does the passage mainly develop? A. By providing examples. B. By making comparisons. C. By following the order of time. D. By following the order of importance. 27. What is the author's purpose in writing the passage? A. To stress the role of dirt. B. To introduce the history of dirt. C. To call attention to the danger of dirt. D. To present the change of views on dirt. D. Uninterested

Many independent Chinese women like to earn their own bread, even if their husbands are already bringing home the bacon. But a recent survey suggests that such women find more joy from relationships, rather than successful careers. About 73 percent of the 7,000 women surveyed in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou said they would choose to work even if their husbands earned enough for the family. The survey also found that 77 percent define happiness as "enjoying a relationship". But striking a balance between career and family can bring challenges to the woman's career advancement. "In my company, women usually have an equal or even a higher starting salary than men," said Li Hua, general manager of Beijing Chuangjiashe Book Circulation Company. "However, as they begin to climb up the career ladder, women often meet problems along the way, while men can climb the ladder more easily." Both physical and emotional differences can prevent some women from taking tough positions, Li said. But family life is often the main difficulty for Chinese career women. Despite these challenges, however, some experts believe it's reasonable for some women to want to be breadwinners. "In this way, the roles of a family are decided by the parents' abilities rather than their gender(性别)," said Gu Donghui, a sociology professor at Fudan University. Gu says women should have the freedom to decide if they want to stay at home or work to support the family. "Everyone has a different interpretation(解释)of what it means to find self-worth". Wang Haibin, an economic expert from Renmin University shares that view: "Traditionally, we tend to regard the family as the cell unit of society. Some members have always been expected to make sacrifices for it. But, it really doesn't matter who earns more. Economic

independence and personal choice is essential for both sexes in the family." 28. What brings career women more joy and happiness according to the passage? A. Money B. Relationships C. Challenges D. Successful careers 29. What's the main problem that career women meet while working? A. Family life B. Tough positions C. Physical difference D. The career ladder 30.Some women want to be breadwinners probably because ______. A. their families are poor B. they have a lot of children C. they want to show their self-worth D. their husbands do not work 31. Who should make sacrifice for the family according to the passage? A. The wife B. The husband C. Either of them D. Neither of them

D
Why is pink or purple a color for girls and blue or brown for boys? The answer depends largely on cultural values as well as personal experiences. To the Egyptians, green was a color that represented the hope and joy of spring, while for Muslims, it means heaven. Red is a symbol of good luck in many cultures. In China, children are given money in a red envelope to bring good fortune in the New Year. For many nations, blue is a symbol of protection and religious beliefs. Greek people often wear a blue necklace hoping to protect themselves against evils(灾祸). People's choice of colors is also influenced by their bodies' reactions(反应)toward them. Green is said to be the most restful color. It has the ability to reduce pain and relax people both mentally and physically. People who work in green environments have been found to have fewer stomach aches. Red can cause a person's blood pressure to rise and increase people's appetites(食欲). Many decorators will include different shades of red in the restaurant. Similarly, many commercial websites will have a red “Buy Now” button because red is a color that easily catches a person's eye. Blue is another calming color. Unlike red, blue can cause people to lose appetite. So if you want to eat less, some suggest that eating from blue plates can help. The next time you are deciding on what to wear or what color to decorate your room, think about the color carefully. 32. Muslims regard green as a symbol of heaven mainly because of their ________. A. cultural values B. commercial purposes C. personal experiences D. physical reactions to the color 33. Why will many commercial websites have a red “Buy Now” button? A. To relax people physically.
