beach. Edmonds had watched dozens of surfers ride the waves that day. As he glanced out of the window, he saw someone in a wet suit facedown in the water. "It doesn't take much to realize someone's in trouble," says Edmonds. "Lifeguards are never really off duty." Edmonds called the team, grabbed first aid equipment, and rushed down to the water. The lifeguards dragged Tuhikarama, 47 and a father of two, to the beach. More than a dozen rescuers took turns pumping oxygen and pressing his chest to start his breathing again. For nearly an hour—far longer than a single lifeguard would have been able to continue the lifesaving technique—the team continued all these. An ambulance finally arrived and took Tuhikarama to the hospital, where he spent a week unconscious in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) while his brain and heart healed. A month after he recovered, Tuhikarama reunited with six of the teenage lifeguards who saved him. "Being spotted by a group of lifeguards was the only thing that saved me," he says. C The Most Peaceful Countries in the World Denmark Denmark tops the list of the most peaceful countries on Earth since it’s really a safe place to live. Even while Copenhagen was under occupation by the Nazis during the World War Ⅱ, it still did not fight. The point is that people living in Denmark prefer to focus on economic matters, instead of involving themselves in various armed conflicts. Norway Many people do not expect Norway to appear in the list of the most peaceful countries in the world. Perhaps, this is because of Anders Behring Breivik, mass(谋杀多人的)murderer, who hit the pride of the country hard. But Norway is one of the world’s most peaceful countries and friendly and safe place to live, with the highest level of human development. Sweden Although Sweden is one of the biggest weapon exporters in Europe, the country has a low level of robberies. According to the Global Peace Index, Sweden is one of the most peaceful countries in the world, in spite of the fact that it’s among the world’s top arms exporters. Besides, Sweden has not been to war and has not participated in any combats (争斗)for the whole two centuries. Iceland Iceland was also ranked as one of the most peaceful countries in the world, staying out of the main conflicts in the world. Iceland seldom or never hits the headlines and despite the collapse(倒闭)of the Icelandic banks several years ago, the country remains as all amazing place of spectacular natural beauty. D It’s a popular belief that a fish’s memory lasts for only seven seconds. It may seem sad to think that they don’t remember what they’ve eaten or where they’ve been, and they don’t recognize you or any of their friends --- every moment in their life would be like seeing the world for the first time. But don’t be so quick to feel sorry for them. A new study has found that fish have a much better memory than we used to think. In fact, certain species of fish can even remember events from as long as 12 days ago. In the study, researchers from MacEwan University in Canada trained a kind of fish called African cichlids to go to a certain area of their tank to get food. They then waited for 12 days before putting them back in the tank again. Researchers used computer software to monitor the fish’s movements. They found that after such a long break the fish still went to the same place where they first got food. This suggested that they could remember their past experiences. In fact, scientists had been thinking for a long time that African cichlids might have a good memory. An earlier study showed that they behaved aggressively in front of certain fish, perhaps because they remembered their past ―fights‖. But until the latest findings, there was no clear evidence. Just as a good memory can make our lives easier, it also plays an important part when a fish is trying to survive in the wild. ―If fish are able to remember that a certain area contains safe food, they will be able to go back to that area without putting their lives at risks,‖ lead researcher Trevor Hamilton told Live Science. For a long time, fish were placed far below chimpanzees, dolphins and mice on the list of smart animals. But this study has given scientists a new understanding of their intelligence. 32. What is the article mainly about? A. Fish having very bad memories. B. Fish being smarter than we thought. C. How fish improve their memory.

A. where to get food and survive B. their enemies and fight C. where to escape to when in danger D. their friends and help each other 35. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A. If not, please let me know. I am Professor John Morris. I’ll be your teacher for the next 13 weeks. As you can probably tell, this is one of the most popular and crowded classes. Indeed, every time this course is offered, this room is very full. Why is that? Well, in order to use the English language, it’s very important to have at least a basic understanding of how words are formed. Just to mention one figure and there are many, there are about 1 million words in English. If you are an English learner, you may wonder how you can possibly remember all of these words. Well, for one thing, you don’t have to. No native speaker exists who

knows all of the words in the English language. Besides, there are short-cuts. Short-cuts? Yes, for example, if you know how words are formed by using parts of words from other languages, such as Greek and French, you’ll understand a good number of English words when you first come across them. Let me put it this way, knowing the rules will help you to master a large number of words. This is probably the NO.1 reason why this class is so popular.
