Derrius Quarles, 19, had an unhappy childhood. But the Chicago teen didn’t give up. He tried his best and won $1 million in college scholarships (奖学全)! Now Derrius is a successful college student with a bright future. When Derrius was 4, his father was killed. His mother couldn’t take care of him because of taking drugs. Derrius and his 9-year-old brother sometimes had to steal food to eat. Derrius felt different from other kids. In seventh grade, Derrius went to live in a foster home (寄养家庭). His foster parents weren’t nice to him. They told him that he’d never be anything in life. Derrius didn’t do his best in school. The summer after ninth grade, that changed. Derrius had signed up for a biology class. He didn’t go to class the first day. On the second day, he showed up late. His teacher took him outside. She told him he was smart, but that he was wasting his potential (潜力). The talk inspired him and he planned to prove that he could be anything if he worked hard enough. Adults at a summer program helped Derrius find out about scholarships he could earn to pay for college. In his senior year, Derrius filled out lots of applications. He told his friends, “You’re not going to see me for a long time.” Derrius’s hard work paid off. He won more than $1 million in scholarships! He has a lot to be proud of. But he’s most proud of helping others. Derrius gives speeches to teens, telling them how to find scholarships. In high school, Derrius got help buying computers so he wanted to help others who needed them. Last year, he gave two laptops to high school students. There’s a lot of work in the future. Derrius

C The number of international students at colleges and universities in the United States has increased for the fifth year running. The Institute of International Education (美国国际教育协会) in New York released its yearly “Open Doors” report this week. It says a record high of more than 720,000 students from other countries studied in America during the last year. The number was 5% higher than the year before and almost one-third higher than ten years ago. There were big increases from China, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam, Iran and Venezuela. Almost 22% percent of international students were Chinese. Together, almost half of all international students came from China, India and South Korea. Peggy Blumenthal at the Institute says Chinese students are now studying throughout the United States. More international students study in California than any other state, followed by New York, Texas, Massachusetts and Illinois. For ten years in a row (连续的), the University of Southern California in Los Angeles led the country, with more than 8,600 foreign students. The most popular area of study for international students is business and management, followed by engineering. Some schools are making special efforts to welcome students from other cultures. Workers greet students in different languages at a dining hall of the University of California, which spent 5 million dollars to modernize. Ms. Blumenthal suggests one reason for the increase is that students and their parents are looking for a different educational experience. “Open Doors” report says about 55% of international students in the United States are women. Almost two-thirds of all foreign students receive the majority of their money from personal and family sources. 63. The text is intended to tell us _____. When many of us think of robots, we picture large, metal objects in the shape of humans, having difficulty moving around. But robots have come a long way. A team at Harvard University in Massachusetts recently developed a soft bodied robot. The team based the design of its robot on sea creatures without hard shells or skeletons. The robotic device was made with soft materials called elastomers (人造橡胶). It is about 13 centimeters long and has four legs that can move separately. The movements are controlled by compressed air and can be operated from a computer. George Whitesides led the Harvard researchers. The United States Department of Defense paid for the project. The robot itself took two months to develop. In tests, researchers have guided the robot under a plate of glass less than three centimeters high. The researchers say their invention can move at a speed of about l.3 meters an hour. A report about the robot was published in November in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Increasingly, soft robots are being developed for difficult jobs like moving through a battlefield or wreckage (残骸) from a natural disaster. The robot can move across uneven surfaces including small rocks and wet dirt. Earlier this year, scientists from Tufts University in Massachusetts developed another kind of soft robot made of silicone rubber (硅橡胶). This robot is about ten centimeters long and shaped like a caterpillar (毛虫). It is able to roll up into a ball shape and move itself forward. But researchers say there are difficulties in making these robots move. For one, they want to find a way for the robot to transport its own power source. They are also hoping to improve its speed. 67. What is the text mainly about? A. The use of robots. B. A new material — elastomer. C. A new way to transport power. D. Newly developed soft-bodied robots. 68. The researchers at Harvard University designed the soft-bodied robots based on _____. A. a science fiction B. the human body C. insects on the ground D. sea creatures without bones 69. What does the underlined word “uneven” in the sixth paragraph probably mean? A. Not flat. B. Not dry. C. Not tidy. D. Not high. 70. What should the researchers in Tufts University do to improve their soft robot? A. Change the shape of the robot. B. Make the robot move more quickly. C. Make the robot useful in an emergency. D. Save the robot’s power and energy.
第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选 项。

The benefits of walking to school Encouraging your child to walk to school has many benefits. 71 The rates of childhood obesity and illnesses can be prevented by a healthy dose of walking. 72 On average around half of all children don’t do the minimum one hour a day of physical activity advised by the Health Education Authority. A quick walk to school can help them get their daily exercise and arrive at school or home, refreshed and energetic. 73 There was very strong evidence that walking to school improves children’s social

development. This related to social contacts, independence and road sense. The walkers reported a happy social experience. It is believed that getting a lift to school each day can lead to a child becoming lethargic (无生气的). According to research, the average drive to schoo1 and back releases 800g of CO2 into the air. 74 If walking to school once a week can save 20 percent of CO2 gas produced by driving every day, how much CO2 can be saved a year! Last but not least, encouraging your child to walk to school will save you money. 75 Since walking to school has so many health, social, environmental and economical benefits, why not let your child walk from now on?
