Don’t you think there’s something to learn from the tortoise?‖ Sonny opened his eyes wide, ―Do you mean next time when I’m entering for the 60-metre race I should wish that Billy, Tony and Sandy would all fall asleep halfway?‖ I was shocked, ―But the tortoise didn’t wish that the hare would fall asleep!‖ ―He must have wished that,‖ Sonny said, ―Otherwise how could he be so foolish as to race with the hare? He knew very well the hare ran a hundred times faster than he himself did.‖ ―He didn’t have such a wish,‖ I insisted. ―He won the race by perseverance (坚忍不拔), by pushing on steadily.‖ Sonny thought a while. ―That’s a lie,‖ he said. ―He won it because he was lucky. If the hare hadn’t happened to fall asleep, the tortoise would never have won the race. He could be as steady as you like, or a hundred times steadier, but he’d never have won the race. That’s for sure.‖ I gave up. Today’s children are not like what we used to be. They’re just hopeless. 21. The writer argued with his son because _____. Fashion refers to the styles of dress that are currently popular. Fashion goes beyond just clothes, though. It’s important for some people to wear only the latest fashions and styles. For others, though, keeping up with trends isn’t that important. The one thing that stays the same with fashion is this: it always changes! During the 1960s and 1970s, Hippies made bell—bottomed blue jeans(喇叭裤)popular. Also, in the 1980s, Michael Jackson made parachute pants(降落伞裤)all the fashion. Now try to find these items in today’s clothing stores! Do you know why fashions change? The answer is probably as simple as the fact that people change. Over time, the new replaces the old. People are influenced greatly by popular culture, including athletes, musicians, movies stars, as well as popular films, television shows, books and music. We are also influenced by the fashion industry’s advertising. The stars of popular culture are always searching for a new angle to maintain(保持)their popularity. Often these new angles come in the form of new clothing or hairstyles. When people see these new styles, they often want to imitate(模仿) their favorite stars. To do so, they seek out the latest fashions to make themselves look like the people they want to imitate. In this way, fashions evolve and change over time. Clothes have been used to separate people into groups for many years. Even today, brand-name, clothing that is more expensive than other types of clothing can be used by some people to make themselves different from others. Unfortunately, this can often have the effect of distancing certain groups from others. Don’t forget that it’s always OK to develop your own sense of style that is unique and separate from what the fashion world determines! Stay true to yourself and let your personality — not your clothes — speak for who you are! 24. What does the example of bell—bottomed blue jeans and parachute pants in Paragraph 2

C Although American children still spend part of their days reading, they are spending less time doing it for pleasure than years ago, with large gaps(差距) in proficiency(熟练), according to a recent report. ―It raises an alarm,‖ said Vicky Rideout, the lead author of the report. ―We’re witnessing a really large drop in reading among teenagers and the speed of that drop is getting faster and faster.‖ The report found that the percentage of nine-year-old children reading for pleasure once or more per week had dropped from 81 percent in 1984 to 76 percent in 2013, based on government studies. About a third of 13-year-olds and almost half of 17-year-olds reported in one study that they read for pleasure less than twice a year. Of those who read or are read to, children often spend on average between 30 minutes and an ch read for pleasure for an equally long time each day. Rideout warned that there may be differences in how people come across texts and the included studies may not take into account stories read on line or on social media. The report also found that many young children are struggling with literacy(识字). Only

about one-third of fourth grade students are ―proficient‖ in reading and another one-third scored below ―basic‖ in reading skills. Despite the large percentage of children with below-basic reading skills, reading scores among young children have improved since the 1970s, according to one test that measures reading ability. The reading scores among 17-year-olds, however, reminded relatively unchanged since the 1790s. About 46 percent of white children are considered ―proficient‖ in reading, compared with 18 percent of black children and 20 percent of Hispanic kids. Those gap remained relatively unchanged over the past 20 years, according to the report. ―To go 20 years with no progress in that area is shameful‖, Rideout said. The report stresses some behaviors that have been tied to children being more frequent readers. Those behaviors include parents setting aside time to read with their children and parents reading themselves to model good behavior. 28. The figures in paragraph 3 show that_____. While women spent their days gathering food, often with children, men were hunters who made plans about how to catch and kill their prey (猎物). These two ways of getting food in the past show how we shop in modern times, the study believes. Women would spend hours trying to find the right things, because they had in the past spent ages trying to find the best quality and health-giving food. Men, on the other hand, decided in advance what animal they wanted to kill and then went looking for it. Once it was found and killed, they returned home. Daniel Kruger, professor of the University of Michigan, said the study could be the answer to why there are a lot of collisions when couples go shopping together. He said it could also help couples to avoid fights in the shops if they understood the reasons why each sex had different ways of deciding on the perfect present. ―In modern times, women are much more likely than men to know when a specific type of item will go on sale. Women also spend much more time choosing the perfect color and texture.‖ Professor Kruger said his study was important because if men and women understood each other’s shopping habits they could avoid arguments while shopping. 32. What has decided the different shopping habits of men and women? A. Different ways of keeping food in the past. past. C. Different ways of buying food in the past. food in the past. 33. Dear parents, I have been studying in Grade One of Guang Ming Middle School for nearly half a year. This half year has seen my surprises, worries, and progress in English learning. First, I was shocked to find myself surrounded by much better English learners when I started my English course. My English teacher’s language ability also puts what I have acquired in shade. Sometimes I even can’t follow my English teacher’s lectures. Secondly, my spoken English always embarrasses myself. I regret for what I ignored before. Thirdly, my vocabulary is still my concern. A larger vocabulary is required to follow the teacher in class for the way of teaching and learning is quite different here. I was upset when I saw my poor score of the test for Unit Two. Faced with all the difficulties, I was determined to fight. With the help of my teacher and my classmates, I have made progress. Now I can roughly understand what the teacher teaches in class despite a fewer problems. Anyway, I am convinced that I will improve my English proficiency, thoug h I still have a long way to go. There is always light at the end of the tunnel, I strongly believe. Yours Lihua 英语听力模拟试题

W: Oh, I’m sorry. Your handwriting is terrible. I can’t read it. Text 3 W: Hi, Rob. I noticed you seemed tired while I was giving today’s lesson. M: Yes, it’s just because I was up late last night watching a movie with my family. Text 4 M: I came up with a method to solve the problem at this morning’s meeting. W: What did they say? M: Nothing. Everyone kept looking at their watches. It was obvious that they were not in the least interested in my suggestion. Text 5 M: What are you reading over there? W: Oh, it’s just a book about Australia. My friend Matilda gave it to me as a gift. She just got back from Sydney. Text 6 M: Hello, my name is Jack. I’m here to meet Professor Peterson. W: Yes, I see your name on my list. I’m sorry, but may I check your ID, please? M: No problem. Here is my driver’s license. W: I’ll call Mr. Peterson and let him know you’ve arrived. He should be out in a coup le of minutes. Just have a seat over there. M: Is it okay if I take some of this coffee? W: Sure. Help yourself to anything on that table. Text 7 M: Hey, are you going home for Christmas? W: Of course! My parents would be so disappointed if I didn’t. Especially since my brother didn’t go home for Christmas last year, because he was traveling in South America. How about you? M: I’m going back to Toronto for Christmas, but I bought my plane ticket too late. The only flight I could get was on Christmas Eve. I’ll be landing in Toronto at 9:00 p.m. W: Well, at least it’s before Christmas Day. M: Yeah, but my mother’s kind of sad because I’ll miss Christmas Eve dinner. Text 8 W: I’d like to send these packages to China, please. M: All right, International Service. Are they all going to the same place? W: No. These two small ones are going to Guangzhou, and this larger one is going to Beijing. M: Okay. And how would you like to ship them: by air or ship? W: The Guangzhou packages don’t need to arrive for a couple of months, so they can be sent by ship, but the Beijing one is a little urgent. M: When do you want it to arrive? W: Within ten days. M: All right, so that one needs to be sent by plane, with express service to Beijing. It should get there within one week. W: Perfect. How much will it be altogether? M: It depends on how much they weigh and what’s inside. W: The two small packages are mostly DVDs and CDs. The larger one is mostly books and magazines. Text 9 M: Oh no, it’s raining again. I’m really getting sick of this. W: Well, it’s London. Everyone knows it rains a lot here. M: I know, but it’s rained every day for the last three weeks! Every time I want to leave the office, it starts to rain. W: Well, at least it’s not a thunderstorm. Just wait a bit — these little showers never last long. M: I can’t wait too long. I’m meeting a friend for dinner at a restaurant downtown at 6 :30. W: Oh well, a little ra in never hurt anybody. But it’s funny — you usually leave the office at 6:00 and get rained on. I usually leave at 7:00, and it’s always stopped by the time I step out the door. I haven’t used my umbrella in two weeks. M: Really? I’ve had to use mine every day! Except for today, that is — I forgot it at home. W: You can borrow mine if you want. I don’t think I’ll need it. 13

M: Really? That’d be great. I can give it back to you tomorrow. W: Sure, no problem. The only thing is, it’s pink. M: Ah. Well, maybe I’ll wait a bit then… Text 10 Hello. First, I’d like to tell you a little bit about myself and then I’ll move on to the show. My name is David, and I’ve been a professional chef with the Household Gourmet for five years now. In this role, I’ve been able to work doing two things I love — cooking and meeting new people. The Household Gourmet was founded thirty years ago to provide people with kitchen products that reduce both cooking and clean-up time. Today, I’ll be preparing two easy, delicious treats for you. The first is a simple meat dish that can be made very quickly using several prepared items from the supermarket. The second treat is a dessert that takes a little bit longer to make, but is well worth the trouble. As I prepare these dishes, I’ll be showing some of our efficient, effective, inexpensive kitchen products for you. And at the end of the show, we’ll all be able to sample the results; then I’ll help you place your orders for Household Gourmet products.
