In addition ,you may turn to Graph 1. on Page 26 to find out the changes of the temperatures from long-term average.

Question: Do you think the whole world is becoming warmer and warmer? But does it matter? This is the topic we are going to discuss for today.

Unit4 Global Warming

Reading The Earth Is Becoming Warmer – But Does It Matter?

Fast Reading

Some think the effects will be terrible, while some others believe that we should not worry about it. Dr. Janice Foster thinks the effects of global warming could be very serious.
George Hambley thinks global warming will be mild with few bad environmental consequences.

4.What are the two graphs about?

Graph 1 shows the temperature increase of one degree Fahrenheit from 1860 to 2000. Graph 2 is about the carbon dioxide content in the atmosphere from 1957 to 1997. 5.What is the main topic of the article?
Global warming / The warming of the earth.

True or false
Read the article carefully and finish Part 2 on Page 27

1.The temperature last century didn’t increase much. ( F) 2.Everyone believes that global warming is caused by the activities of humans. (F )
3.Janice Foster believes that global warming is caused by burning fossil fuels. (T ) 4.Natural gas is a greenhouse gas. ( F) 5.Carbon dioxide is a byproduct of burning fossil fuels. ( T )

6.People accept Charles Keeling’ s data because he took accurate measurements. (T )
7.Flooding could be one of the effects of future global warming. ( T ) 8.George Hambley believes scientists are just guessing about the effects of global warming. (T ) 9.George Hambley is worried about the effects of carbon dioxide on plant growth. ( F)

10.It is clear what the effects of global warming will be. ( F)

Careful Reading

1.Read the text again and try to get the main idea of the article.

The main idea of the passage: Part 1(Paragraphs 1)

List two different attitudes among scientists towards global warming

Part 4(Pa 11)
It’s up to readers to think and decide whether people should do something about global warming or not

How has the global warming come about?

①Human activity--- burning of fossil fuels.

② Greenhouse effect--- greenhouse gases--- we need those gases.

③ We add huge quantities of extra carbon dioxide to the atmosphere by burning Fossil fuels. The carbon dioxide content of the atmosphere went up from around 315 parts per million to around 370 parts per million from 1957 to 1997 (See Graph 2 on Page 26 )

The two different viewpoints towards the effects of global warming between Dr. Janice Foster and George Hambley

Dr. Janice Foster Carbon dioxide has caused the global temperature to go up __________. An increase of five degrees would be a ____________ and catastrophe could be very serious ______________.

George Hambley More carbon dioxide is positive a __________ thing, which makes crops produce __________ and will encourage a greater range of ____________________.

Of the two ideas, which are you in

favor of ?
The Dr Janice Foster’s.

Why ?

The sea level to rise.

Severe storms

the spread of diseases

destruction of species

What should we do about the terrible effects above?

Try to reduce the use of motor vehicles

electric vehicle

Solar energy car

Planting trees

Cleaning the rubbish
