He stopped right next to me to greet his family. First he kissed his three children one by one and said, “It’s 2 nice to see you. I missed you so much!” Then he hugged his wife, “I’ve saved the best for last!” giving her the longest, most passionate kiss I ever remember seeing. They stared at each other’s eyes, smiling at one another, while holding both hands. For an instant they reminded me of newlyweds(新婚夫妇), but I knew by the age of their kids that they couldn’t possibly be. Full of admiration, I asked, “Wow! How long have you two been married?” “Being together for fourteen years total, married twelve of those.” He replied, without breaking his gaze from his lovely wife’s face. “Well, then, how long have you been away?” I asked. “Two whole days!” “Two days?” I was astonished. By the intensity (热烈) of the greeting, I had assumed he’d been gone for at least several weeks --- if not months. I knew my expression betrayed me, so I turned away my eyes and said quietly, “I hope my marriage is still that passionate after so long!” The man suddenly stopped smiling and looked me straight in the eye. With forcefulness he told me something that left me a different person. “Don’t hope, friend…decide!” Then he smiled again, shook my hand and said, “God bless!” With that, he and his family turned and walked away together. I was still watching that man and his special family walk just out of sight when my friend came up to me and asked, “What are you looking at?” Without hesitation, and with a curious sense of certainty, I replied, “My future!” 61. It dates back to the early cave men who discovered they could add lifelike qualities to drawings of animals and other figures on the walls of caves by mixing the natural colours found in the earth with water. Fresco (壁画), one of the greatest of all art forms, is done with watercolour. It is created by mixing paints and water and applying these to wet plaster (灰泥). Of the thousands of people who stand under Michelangelo’s heroic ceiling in the Sistine Chapel, very few know that they are looking at perhaps the greatest watercolour painting in the world. The invention of oil painting by the Flemish masters in the fifteenth century made fresco painting go down-hill, and for the next several centuries watercolour was used mainly for doing sketches (草图) or as a tool for study. It was not until the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries that English painters put back watercolour as a serious art form. The English have a widely-known love for outdoors and also small private pictures. The softness of watercolour had a remarkably strong attraction for them. The popularity of watercolour continued to grow until the twentieth century. The United States passed England as the center for watercolour, producing such well-known watercolour artists as Thomas Eakins and Andrew Wyeth. 69. III. 阅读理解(满分 8 分) Last month, James Connolly, a junior at the university of Massachusetts, stood in front of a local police station wearing a loose garment as punishment. He was charged with underage drinking, illegal possession of alcohol and very big noise while holding a party. This shaming punishment has increased in the US in recent years, mostly decided by local judges for less-serious crimes such as drunk driving and theft. They believe shame is the best small crime punishment. For example, in Tennessee, Judge James McKenzie has made a shoplifter stand outside Wal-Mart with signs bearing, “I’m a thief put here by order of Judge McKenzie”. Some experts think alternative punishment like community service and fines don’t convey moral condemnation(谴责)of the criminal because they aren’t shameful enough. Shaming punishments are sometimes called Scarlet Letter punishments. The name comes from US author Nathaniel Hawthorne’s 1850 novel, The Scarlet Letter. In this novel, a woman is forced to wear a scarlet (red) “A” on her clothes as punishment for her adultery. However, not everyone agrees. Experts said there is an important difference between the shaming punishments of colonial America and those in states like Tennessee. “Early societies often had a ‘re-acceptance’ ceremony to welcome the offender(冒犯者)back into main society, contemporary punishments in America lack this.” Supporters of shaming punishment argue that public shaming is a good way of expressing community values. Some judges say shamed offenders seldom repeat their crimes. Others are so sure. “There is little evidence to suggest that shaming punishments are successful in preventing people committing special crimes. And a shamed criminal may face a hard battle to regain reputation in society. So a shaming punishment may force the offender into more crimes.” 1. James Connolly was punished because __________. A. he wore a loose garment in front of a local police station B. he drank so much that he caused a serious accident C. he broke the law of alcohol and held a noisy party D. he stole goods including alcohol from a supermarket 2. In early American societies, offenders __________. A. wore a red “A” on their clothes as punishment B. would never gain respect from other people C. did not receive any moral condemnation D. had the chance of being accepted by society again 3. We can infer from the passage that _________. A. shaming criminals publicly is a good way of expressing community values B. shaming punishment has a long history in the United States C. shaming punishment can always have good results D. community service and fines don’t convey moral condemnation
4. Which is the best title for the passage? A. Doubtful Punishment B. Successful Punishment C. Increasing Punishment D. Opinions on the question are divided as follows. Sixty percent of the students subscribe to the view that students can bring a mobile phone to school because it has many advantages. If a student has a mobile phone, he she can contact his parents and friends easily. (It is convenient for a student who carries a mobile phone to get in touch with his/her parents and friends.) He can also take pictures and enjoy music to relax himself. Besides, it ’s fashionable to have a mobile phone. While 40 percent of the students are opposed to the view, because with mobile phones some students may have a chat on the Internet and be addicted to playing games. What is worse, some even get into the habit of sending text messages to their friends. Thus, students may not focus their attention on (concentrate on /pay much attention to) their lessons. If by chance the phone is not turned off, the ringing will disturb the class. Furthermore, using mobile phones will add to their parents’ economic burdens. Actually, students should place their study before other things and there is no need for us to use mobile phones. Personally, I don’t think it’s a good idea to bring mobile phones to school, Yours sincerely Li Ming
