It is not always easy to get a child to like to read. However, there are things you can do to help him or her fall in love with books. The first and most important thing an adult must do is to be a book-lover. If the adults in a child’s life do not read, the child will have difficulty making the connection between reading and enjoyment. Let him or her see your response to what you are reading. If it is a funny story, laugh and tell your child you enjoy it. If it is a sad news report, show your sad expression, and explain to your child why you are sad. If it is a how-to article, let your child know what you have just learned. Arrange a special time for you and your child to read together, at least four times a week. Let him or her pick out what they want to read with you. Talk about what you are reading and discuss any pictures while reading. Ask him or her questions about how he or she feels about what you are reading. Tell your child that this is important and that you value his or her opinion. This kind of positive activity will create warm and comfortable memories. Make reading funny. Use funny voices while reading a story. Encourage your child to use funny voices. Both of you can role-play the characters of the story, pretending to be part of the story. The more you play with your child, the more excited he or she will be about learning new things. 41. D Robert Spring, a 19 century forger(伪造者), was so good at his profession that he was able to make his living for 15 years by selling false signatures of Americans. Spring was born in England in 1813 and arrived in Philadelphia in 1858 to open a bookstore. At first he became rich by selling his small but real collection of early U.S. autographs(手稿). Discovering his ability at copying handwriting, he began imitating signatures of George Washington and Ben Franklin and writing them on the title pages of old books. To lessen the chance of detection(察觉), he sent his forgeries to England and Canada for sale. Forgers have a hard time selling their products. A forger can’t deal with a respectable buyer but people who don’t have much knowledge in the field. Forgers have many ways to make their work look real. For example, they buy old books to use the aged paper of the title page, and they can treat paper and ink with chemicals. In Spring’s time, right after the Civil War, Britain was still fond of the Southern states, so Spring invented a respectable maiden lady known as Miss Fanny Jackson, the only daughter of General ―Stonewall‖ Jackson. For several years Miss Fanny’s financial problems forced her to sell a great number of letters and manuscripts. Spring had to work very hard to satisfy the demand. All this activity did not prevent Spring from dying in poverty, leaving sharp-eyed experts the difficult task of separating his forgeries from the originals. 53. Why did Spring sell his false autographs in England and Canada? A. There was a greater demand there than in America. B. There was less chance of being detected there. C. Britain was Spring’s birthplace D. The prices were higher in England and Canada. 54.After the Civil War, there was a great demand in Britain for . A. Southern money B. signatures (签名)of George Washington and Ben Franklin C. Southern manuscripts and letters D. Civil War battle plans 55.Robert Spring spent 15 years . A. running a bookstore in Philadelphia B. keeping in touch with Miss Fanny Jackson C. as a forger D. as a respectable dealer 56. According to the passage, forgeries are usually sold to . A. sharp-eyed experts B. persons who aren’t experts C. book dealers D. owners of old books E I made a promise to myself on the way down to the vacation beach cottage. For two weeks I would try to be a loving husband and father. Totally loving. No ifs, ands or buts. The idea had come to me as I listened to a talk on my car radio. The speaker was quoting（引 用） a Biblical passage about husbands and their wives. Then he went on to say, ―Love is an act of will. A person can choose to love.‖ To myself, I had to admit that I had been a selfish husband. Well, for two weeks that would change. And it did. Right from the moment I kissed Evelyn at the door and said, ―That new yellow sweater looks great on you.‖
―Oh, Tom, you noticed‖, she said, surprised and pleased. Maybe a little puzzled. After the long drive, I wanted to sit and read. Evelyn suggested a walk on the beach. I started to refuse, but then I thought, ―Evelyn’s been alone here with the kids all week and now she wants to be alone with me.‖ We walked on the beach while the children flew their kites. So it went. Two weeks of not calling the Wall Street firm where I am a director; a visit to the shell museum though I usually hate museums. Relaxed and happy, that’s how the whole vacation passed. I made a new promise to keep on remembering to c hoose love. There was one thing that went wrong with my experiment, however. Evelyn and I still laugh about it today. On the last night at our cottage, preparing for bed, Evelyn stared at me with the saddest expression. ―What’s the matter?‖ I asked her. ―Tom,‖ she said in a voice filled with distress, ―do you know something I don’t?‖ ―What do you mean?‖ ―Well…that checkup I had several weeks ago…our doctor…did he tell you something about me? Tom, you’ve been so good to me…am I dying?‖ It took a moment for it all to be understood. Then I burst out laughing. ―No, honey,‖ I said, wrapping her in my arms. ―You’re not dying; I’m just starting to live.‖ 57. In the first paragraph, ―No ifs, ands or buts‖ probably means ______. A. Unintentionally B. Independently C. Impressively (印象深刻的 ) D. Unconditionally 58. During the two weeks on the beach, Tom showed more love to his wife because ______. A. he was determined to be a good husband B. he had made a lot of money in his Wall Street firm C. she looked lovely in her new clothes D. the doctor said his wife was seriously ill 59. The author says, ―There was one thing that went wrong with my experiment.‖ What does ―one thing‖ refer to? A. He praised her sweater, which puzzled her. B. She insisted on visiting a museum, which he hated. C. He knew something about her illness but didn’t tell her. D. He was so good to her that she thought she must be dying. 60. 任务型阅读： 根据短文内容，从下框的 A-F 选项中选出能概括出每段主题的最佳选项。选项中有一项是 多余项。 A. B. C. D. E. F. The history of the city The city attracted all kinds of immigrants and developed its multi-cultures. The brief introduction to New Orleans The origin of Jazz The population of the city African people arrived and they brought their own traditions including music. .
New Orleans, the city of Louisiana, is one of the most colorful and interesting places in North America. It is well known for its multicultural cuisine(菜肴) and its colonial architecture and is considered by most experts to be the birthplace of jazz, the one music style that the USA can lay claim to inventing. 62. The city was founded in 1718, at a time when France owned that part of North America. Part of its diversity results from the fact that it was subjected to many different influences. France sold Louisiana to Spain in1763, got it back 40 years later, and almost immediately sold the territory to the USA. 63. As the city prospered(繁荣), it became a magnet(磁铁)for all kinds of immigrants from Europe and other parts of the USA, and was also the first choice destination of breed black slaves. The rich cultural mix led to a relaxed attitude to life and an appreciation of good food, wine, music and dancing. There were frequent festivals. 64. By the end of the 1700s, people of African descent(祖先) made up more than half the city’s population. Many more arrived via the Caribbean and brought with them West Indian cultural traditions. By the mid-18th century, black New Orleans people were gathering socially on Sundays at a special market outside the city, where they were able to remember and practice their traditional African dance and drumming music. The roots of jazz can be traced to these events. 65. Native American musicians then combined their music with the African traditions and bands playing a mixture of styles began to perform in street festivals. Europeans came to listen and contribute and the roots of jazz were established. Louis Armstrong, the most famous jazz musician of all time, was influenced by these rich musical mixtures when he heard them in the early years of the 20th century.

Top Meal of the Day A recent survey shows that nearly 30% of the students in our school do not have breakfast. They tend to feel sleepy in class and have bad memories, so it is hard for them to get high marks in all kinds of test. Some students who study late into the night choose to miss breakfast so that they can have a few extra minutes in bed. Others are given money to buy their breakfast on their way to school because their parents are too busy to prepare it for them. In addition, a few schoolgirls want to keep slim and often go to school without breakfast. In fact, the morning meal plays an important part. It can provide 30 percent of the whole day’s energy, which helps improve the efficiency of their studying. So school kids should start their day with a regular breakfast.
