However, it presents a hostile ( 不友好的) environment. Temperatures range +120 to -150 degrees Centigrade. There is no air, and no water. Today there is considerable scientific speculation (思索) about living on the moon. When man will begin life on the moon surface is still not determined. But experts believe that settlement will take place in three steps. First, there will be increasing periods of exploration with temporary shelters. These periods will be followed by longer stays with housing under the surface of the moon and daily necessities brought by the settlers themselves from the earth. Finally, settlements that are self-supporting will be founded. The main job of the early settlers will be to stay alive. They will have to plant crops under huge domes (圆顶屋) to produce food and oxygen and find water sources. After this is done, the settlers will have time to explore the possibilities of commercial (商业的) development and to make discoveries important to science. The characteristics of the moon that make it bad for human staying alive may make it ideal for certain kinds of manufacturing (制造业). Operations requiring a vacuum (真空) or extreme cold are examples. Therefore, industrial diamonds might be produced on the moon. 60. The area of the moon is _________.

The quality of drinking water in Shanghai will meet European Union standard by 2010 and, a decade later, citizens in Shanghai will drink the best water in the world. These were the goals set out by the Shanghai Water Authority. With the city’s population expected to increase only slightly and the economy to boom by 2020, Chen Yin, and official with the water authority, said Shanghai’s water consumption(消耗) will not increase from its present amount. Zhang Yue, director of the Urban Construction Division under the Ministry of Construction, said, ―Shanghai is the first city in the country to publicize （宣布） these ambitions. They will not be easy to achieve.‖ He said water saving will help keep the sustainable development of China’s economy. Saving one cubic meter of water means saving the city’ s infrastructure （基础设施） costs by 10,000 Yuan. Last year, Shanghai saved 300 million cubic meters of water either from readjustment of industrial structure or the employment of new technology. ―The aim is to arouse public awareness of the seriousness of water shortages,‖ Chen said. ―The abundant surface water and amount of rain of the city are so misleading that they result in improper use of water.‖ Shanghai lacks drinkable water. The Huangpu River, which supplies 80 percent of the city’s drinkable water, is nearing exhaustion（枯竭）. The city, therefore, has been exploring new sources from the Yangtze River and growing forests along it to conserve quality water. Besides penning regulations, the authority is popularizing technology among the public to efficiently cut the amount of water used. At present, the city has 600，000 family toilets, each using 13 liters of water per flush. These are to be renovated（整修）to use only 9 liters of water per flush（冲刷）. The authority is renovating（翻新） the first 200 toilets for households – at a cost of 40 Yuan each. In three years, all the toilets will be renovated, which saves the city nearly 15 million Yuan every year in water conservation. Another task the city is engaged in is the treatment of sewage（污水）to improve the water environment. At present the city can only treat 44 percent of its daily 5.04 million tons of waste water. To meet the total demand, 27 more sewage treatment factories are to be established with an estimated investment of 18 billion Yuan. 67．People in Shanghai get their daily water mainly from _______now. A．the underground B．the rain C．the Yangtze River D．the Huangpu River 68．The authority is renovating the first 200 toilets for households to_______. . A．make people’s living more convenient B．improve people’s living standards C．ease employment pressure D．meet the total demand of water 69．Which group of measures（措施） are all mentioned in the passage to save water? a．Improve drinking water quality b．Change some industrial structure

Without treatment, a bad cut can lead to permanent(永久的) damage. But how should a person know when a bleeding cut is serious enough to require medical attention? Here are some tips from Dr. Martin Brown, chairman of the department of emergency at Inova Alexandria Hospital in Virginia. 1. Laceration (裂口) The medical term for a cut or tear in the skin is a laceration. 71 A long cut on a finger can likely be treated without a visit to a doctor if the wound is not very deep. However, if you have a short but deep laceration, you will need professional attention. 2. Fingertips（指尖）cut off Some injuries, like a fingertip that gets cut off, might even need surgery to repair. 72 More often, cutting down the bone is what is done because reattaching a fingertip is often not successful. 3. Bleeding 73 Small cuts usually produce what is known as venous (静脉的) bleeding. This means the blood flows steadily from the injury. The bleeding will often stop when pressure is put on the wound. In most cases holding direct pressure with a clean cloth for four to five minutes would do. But if a cut appears to be pumping blood out with some force, this may be a sign of arterial (动脉 的) bleeding. 74 Finally, always keep this in mind: even a cut that does not require medical attention must be kept clean to prevent infection（感染）. Small cuts should be cleaned gently with clean water. 75 Then cover it with a clean, dry bandage. A. How a wound bleeds can be a sign of how serious it is. B. That requires a specialist to either cut down the bone or reattach the fingertip. C. This kind of injury should be treated by a medical professional as soon as possible. D. The first signs of this disease include difficulty opening the mouth. E. Use a washcloth to clean the area if the wound is dirty. F. With a cut finger, holding the hand above the heart can reduce the loss of blood. G. The length is usually not as important as the depth.
