In the early 20th century, Dubai was a successful trading port. People from the world stopped in Dubai to do business. But it was still a small city, and most people lived as fishermen and businessmen. Then in 1966, oil was discovered. This brought a lot of money into the area, and soon Dubai began to change. Today Dubai is one of the world's most important business centers. In fact, each year the city gets its money mainly from business, not oil. Recently Dubai has attracted more and more visitors from abroad. They come to relax on its beaches, and every year, millions visit just to go shopping! Dubai is also one of the world's fastest growing cities. Many tall buildings are built in months. The city also has many man-made islands. One of these, the Palm Jumeirah, is like a palm tree and is very beautiful. The city is still an amazing mix of people from different countries. People from 150 countries live and work in Dubai, and foreigners now outnumber Dubai natives by eight to one! Many people welcome the city's growth. But an increasing number of Dubai natives worry about the speed of change. As a Dubai native says, “We must always remember where we came from. Our kids must know we worked very, very hard to get where we are now, and there's a lot more work to do.” 21. Why did people stop in Dubai in the early 20th century? A. To relax. B. To buy oil. C. To go shopping. D. To do business. 22. In the last paragraph, what does the underlined part mean? A. We should always visit Dubai. 23. What's the main idea of the passage? A. Dubai is growing very fast. B. Dubai was a big city before 1966. C. Many tall buildings are built in months. D. Many tourists come to relax on Dubai's beaches. B B. We should learn from foreigners. C. We must always remember our past. D. We don’t have to worry about the future.
Think about what you had for lunch: Was it a hamburger? A chicken sandwich? Barbecue? What about vegetables? Would it surprise you to learn that what you eat can affect the whole planet? It can—in a big way. New studies show how food and its production affect the globe and its warming climate. You’ve probably heard of global warming. The temperature is on the rise because humankind has been releasing (排放) amounts of gases into the atmosphere. One of these greenhouse gases is carbon dioxide (二氧 化碳). What does this have to do with food? A big part of the carbon dioxide that we put in the atmosphere every year comes from the process of making and eating food. The production of meat contributes a lot of that carbon dioxide. And much of meat’s contribution comes from beef, which is responsible for releasing even more warming gases into the atmosphere. The process of making a hamburger, for example, requires a lot of energy. A cow has to be fed and raised on farmland, and cow waste is a major source of methane (沼气) — an especially powerful greenhouse gas. The cow has to be killed. The meat has to be processed and shipped to a shop, which takes fuel. Most of the cow won’t even be used for meat that people eat. By the time a hamburger finally lands on a dinner plate, it has made a heavy effect on the environment. We can reduce the production of global-warming gases by eating less beef. Other kinds of meat like pork and chicken do less harm to the environment—at least in terms of the amount of greenhouse gases released. All kinds of meat are harder on the planet than vegetables. To grow and eat a pound of potatoes, for example, sends less than one-quarter pound of carbon dioxide into the air. So changing our diet to less meat and more vegetables, as it turns out, may do the world some good. 24. The questions asked in the first paragraph are used to _____. A. show the author’s concern about food safety B. express the author’s puzzlement at what to eat C. introduce the topic to be discussed in the passage D. remind readers of something delicious to eat 25. What is the bad news for meat-eaters? A. Most cows are raised not for people to eat. B. Meat producing contributes to global warming. C. There is a lot of carbon dioxide in the meat 26. A. explain the importance of eating meat a greener diet C. advise people to keep a balanced diet foods to people C Reading to dogs is an unusual way to help children improve their literacy skills D. introduce some healthy B. encourage people to choose we eat. D. Animals begin to die off because of global warming.
（读写能力）, With their shining brown eyes, wagging tails, and unconditional love, dogs can provide the nonjudg-mental listeners needed for a beginning reader to gain confidence, according to Intermountain Therapy Animals (ITA) in Salt Lake City. The group says it is the first program in the country to use dogs to help develop literacy in children, with the introduction of Reading Education Assistance Dogs (READ). The Salt Lake City Public Library is sold on the idea. “Literacy specialists admit that children who read below the level of their fellow pupils are often afraid of reading aloud in a group, often have lower self-respect, and regard-reading as a headache.” said Lisa Myton, manager of the children’s department. Last November the two groups started “Dog Day Afternoon” in the children’s department of the main library. About 25 children attended each of the four Saturday-afternoon classes, reading for half an hour. Those who attended three or four of the classes received a “paw graphed” book at the last class. Only when we are healthy can we study well and enjoy life. However, many teenagers don't pay any attention to their health, especially during the holiday. And they spend too much time watching TV, playing games and chatting on the Internet all night, which is bad for their health. For one thing, watching the screen for too long may get them near?sighted. For the other, they are likely to become much weaker as a result of a lack of physical exercise. To make matters worse, they will lose the chance to communicate with others face to face as they never go out, which may have a bad effect on their mental health. In my opinion, they should spend less time in front of the TV or the computer, go out to take some exercise, visit some places of interest and have a healthy lifestyle. 听力原文： (Text 1) M: Hi, Laura. Could you translate the paper for me? The manager needs it by 4 p.m. But I have to attend a meeting now. W: All right. I’ll do it right away. (Text 2)
M: Hi, Jamie. How was your performance in your maths class? W: I got the right answers on every single question, even from Mr. Graham. M: That sounds great. I knew you were so worried about it. Good job! (Text 3) M: Did you go to the multicultural fair today? W: Yeah. It was really interesting. I tried some Korean barbeque, had some Thai iced tea and watched a native American dance. (Text 4) M: It’s my first time here. Can you tell me how to use the lab? W: You should either go to any computer or come to the help desk to reserve a computer. If you want to print something, you can go to the next room. (Text 5) M: I lost my ID card. What do I do to replace it? W: Fill out your name and social security number on this form, and stand behind that line. I’ll take your picture here. M: OK. I’m ready. W: I’ll print you the new ID card in about a minute. (Text 6) W: Excuse me? Can you tell me how to get to the Language Arts building? M: Sure. Follow Centre Walk in the garden, then turn right onto the bridge. W: OK. M: Take a left after the bridge. ⑦The Language Arts building is the first building on the right. It’s across from the Physical Education building. W: Thanks a lot. (Text 7) M:⑧I’ve just managed to get part-time work at the Woof Pet Store on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Now I have to decide whether to stay on the basketball team or go to work. W: Look, I’ve arranged to work at the pet store on Mondays and Wednesdays. ⑨I don’t have anything on Tuesdays and Thursdays so I’d have no problem changing with you. Let’s ask Mr. Parker if we can do that.
M: Jennifer. Thanks a lot. I’m sure he’ll agree. (Text 8) M: I know that you don’t feel very well and you’re losing weight. Has school been very difficult lately? W: Yes. ⑩I just finished taking my midterms. I’ve been drinking a lot of coffee to stay up late to study. M: What about exercise? Have you been able to get any exercise during midterm exams? W: No. I’ve been studying so much that I haven’t had time. M: It sounds to me that you haven’t given your body a chance to get better. W: What should I do? M: First, you must sleep more. Next, you have to eat better. Your body cannot work well if you don’t give it good food. Try to eat more vegetables and fruits. And limit your coffee to two cups a day. Finally, you should exercise more. It doesn’t have to be running or dancing. Walking is an excellent exercise and is easy to do. W: All right. Thank you, doctor. (Text 9) W:Good morning, Mr. Miller. My name is Alice Sommers. I have come to interview you for our school newspaper. M: Good morning. I suppose you would like my opinions on some social problems. W: Not exactly, sir. We’d like to find out how your normal day begins. M: Well, that’s easy. My alarm clock wakes me up at 6:15 a.m. Then I do a few exercises to get my head clear, take a shower and have my breakfast, which is always a piece of bread, a cup of coffee and the morning newspaper. I arrive at my office a little before 8:00 a.m. and begin by checking any messages. If possible I take a little rest about 2:00 p.m. to relax and then continue with my schedule until 6 or 7 p.m. I usually get home around 7:30 p.m., spend some time with my family, and go to bed about 11:00 p.m. You know I have two kids that I don’t see very much except on weekends. Fortunately, we spend a lot of time together on weekends, unless there’s some emergency that I have to attend to. W: Thank you very much.
M: It’s been a pleasure. (Text 10) M: Good morning, everyone. It’s good to see you all here today. I believe some of you once dreamed of becoming famous. I was one of you. Now I’d like to share my story with you. As a young actor, I first arrived in Los Angeles in 1984. I saw the shining lights of the city as the plane landed and I felt excited as the first step that would lead me to fortune got under way. I imagined that the development of my dream would move smoothly and soon, I would be one of the best known faces on cinema screen throughout the world. I was confident in my first performance in 1986. I knew the lead role was perfect for me. I was anxious to become well-known. But when they offered me a small role, I saw that my plans for quick success had been ruined. Over the years I tried out for other roles, but I never got a good part. Sometimes I thought of giving up. Five years later, I found myself working in the offices of a movie company. And eventually I ended up as a manager of this company after years of hard work. You know, it isn’t easy doing this jobs. There are a lot of things you need to consider, always be ready to take responsibility if things go wrong. And you need to deal with actors who think they are the master of the world — boy, you can’t imagine what a pain that is!
