第三部分:阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

A
Zoos have been around for centuries — and they’ve changed a lot over the years. In the Middle Ages, wealthy people kept animals in their gardens. Public animal parks appeared in European cities in the late 1700s and early 1800s. The Philadelphia Zoo, the first in the United States, opened in 1874. Until a few decades (十年) ago, most zoos were organized by creatures — monkeys in one area, cats in another, birds somewhere else, just like museum collections. In recent years, zoos have instead begun grouping animals that would normally interact (互相作用) in the wild. Moreover, instead of closing animals behind bars, designers are creating landscapes like the environments in which these creatures would naturally be found. Nearby signs provide information about the animals and their habitats in parts of the world where they normally live. The Denver Zoo’s new Predator Ridge exhibit, for example, aims to teach visitors about Africa. Eight acres of land provide homes for 14 animal species, including lions, porcupines, cranes, and wild dogs. Plants from the region grow alongside African-like landform. Ten-foot-tall mounds (土墩) give lions a place from which to survey their surroundings, just as they would do in the wild.

6

Landscape design makes visitors to the Denver Zoo’s Predator Ridge exhibit feel like they’re really in Africa. Animals in Predator Ridge can’t actually be mixed with one another, for safety reasons. But hidden deep channels and other smart features allow visitors to see all the animals at once. Different species can see each other too. 56. What is the passage mainly about? A. The safety problem of zoos. B. The living habits of zoo animals. C. Changes of zoos over the time. D. Protection of zoo animals. 57. Give the correct order of the following things according to time. a. Different species were kept in a group. b. Zoos were organized by species. c. Natural environments were created in zoos. d. Animals were kept in people’s gardens. A. b; d; c; a B. d; a; c; b C. b; d; a; c D. d; b; a; c 58. In the Denver Zoo ten-foot-tall mounds are built to _____. A. protect the safety of visitors B. create a natural environment for lions C. separate lions from other animals D. offer visitors a better view of lions 59. We can learn from the passage that _____. A. the earliest zoos were probably rich people’s gardens B. the Philadelphia Zoo is the first zoo in the world C. the new Predator Ridge exhibit is held in Africa D. more animals will be kept in zoos in the future

B
We like to consider ourselves the superior race, and we are. It’s true that we are getting to know more and more, and we actually live in “the information age”. Our human vanity(虚荣心) makes us believe that we really have to know everything! Surprisingly, we do not have this ability. The question “what is happening in the Bermuda Triangle” is the very proof. Where is the Bermuda Triangle located? The mysterious triangle is believed to be situated between Florida, Bermuda and Puerto Rico, where too many unusual events have happened. On December the 5th 1945, five U.S. military planes took off from Florida on a

7

clear day only to disappear over Bermuda. Furthermore, some other disappearances took place; in 1947, an American C54 plane simply disappeared at 100 miles from Bermuda; at 80 miles, a Star Tiger plane disappeared in 1948. Even Columbus had trouble in Bermuda. Some of his journals were about the strange happenings there: “the waters are changing their colors” and “compasses are going wild”. Maybe it’s why it is called the Devil’s triangle or the Atlantic cemetery. Many hypotheses were stated in order to explain the strange events. In spite of these attempts, the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle remains unsolved. Some people get to say that maybe aliens are involved in it. Other imaginative scientists relate the happenings in Bermuda to Einstein’s theory, saying that the missing ships and planes are translated to another dimension of space and time and taken into another world. Maybe we will just have to wait to go to Heaven and ask the One who made it. The answer will surely be a satisfying one! 60. The writer may probably think that______. A. humans have to and can know everything strange B. the missing ships are taken into another world C. humans can know more in “the information age” D. God created the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle 61. Columbus’ journals told us that in Bermuda _______. A. an American C54 plane disappeared B. there were some strange happenings C. the compasses were lost D. a cemetery was found 62. The underlined word “hypotheses” in the 6th paragraph probably means______. A. guesses B. reports C. places D. stories 63. The purpose of the writer is to______. A. tell some stories about the Bermuda Triangle B. warn people not to travel to the Bermuda Triangle C. laugh at man’s vanity to know everything D. prove man does not have the ability to know all

C
When something goes wrong,it can be very satisfying to say,“Well, it’s so-and-so’s fault.” or “I know I’m late, it’s not my fault; car broke down. ”It but the is probably not your fault, but once you form the habit of blaming somebody or

8

something else for a bad situation, you are a loser. You have no power and could do nothing that helps change the situation. However, you can have great power over what happens to you if you stop focusing on whom to blame and start focusing on how to remedy the situation. This is the winner’s key to success. Winners are great at overcoming problems. For example, if you were late because your car broke down, maybe you need to have your car examined more regularly. Or, you might start to carry along with you the useful phone numbers, so you could call for help when in need. For another example, if your colleague causes you problems on the job for lack of responsibility or ability, find ways of dealing with his irresponsibility or inability rather than simply blame the person. Ask to work with a different person, or don’t rely on this person. You should accept that the person is not reliable and find creative ways to work successfully regardless of how your colleague fails to do his job well. This is what being a winner is all about—creatively using your skills and talents so that you are successful no matter what happens. Winners don’t have fewer problems in their lives; they have just as many difficult situations to face as anybody else. They are just better at seeing those problems as challenges and opportunities to develop their own talents. So, stop focusing on “whose fault it is.” Once you are confident about your power over bad situations, problems are just stepping stop on for success. 64. According to the passage, winners _____. A. deal with problems rather than blame others B. meet with fewer difficulties in their lives C. have responsible and able colleagues D. blame themselves rather that others 65. The underlined word "remedy" in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to _____. A. avoid B. accept C. improve D. consider 66. When your colleague brings about a problem, you should _____. A. find a better way to handle the problem B. blame him for his lack of responsibility C. tell him to find the cause of the problem D. ask a more able colleague for help 67. When problems occur, winners take them as ______. A. excuses for their failures B. barriers to greater power C. challenges to their colleagues D. chances for self-development

The city of Rome has passed a new law to prevent cruelty to animals. All goldfish bowls are no longer allowed and dog owners must walk their dogs. This comes after a national law was passed to give prison sentences to people who desert cats or dogs. “The civilization of a city can be measured by this,” said Monica Carina, the councilor (议员) behind the new law. “It’s good to do whatever we can for our animals who in exchange for a little love fill our existence with their attention,” she told a Rome newspaper. The newspaper reported that round bowls don’t give enough oxygen for fish and may make them go blind. “Rome has tried to protect fish more than anywhere else in the world. It stands out for recognizing that fish are interesting animals who deserve(值得) over respect and compassion every bit as much as dogs and cats and other animals,” said Karin Robertson, a director of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Last year a law was passed in Italy that gives people who desert pets big fines (罚 款) and prison sentences. Since then local governments have added their own animal protection rules. The northern city of Turin passed a law in April to give pet owners fines of up to $598 if they do not walk their dogs three times a day. The new law in Rome also says that owners mustn’t leave their dogs in hot cars or cut their dogs’ tails to make them look lovelies. The law also gives legal recognition to the “cat ladies” who feed homeless cats. The cats live all over the city from ancient ruins to modern office car parks. 68. The new law passed in Rome will ________. A. help improve fishing environment B. guarantee better conditions for goldfish C. stop people from catching goldfish D. discourage keeping goldfish at home 69. People in Rome believe that the civilization of a city can be judged by its ______. A. exchanges with other cities B. protection for ancient ruins C. awareness of animal protection D. recognition of animal lovers 70. People may break the law in Turin if they ________. A. keep their dogs or cats in cars B. feed homeless animals in car parks C. raise their cats near ancient ruins D. shut their dogs home all day long

Scientists say that humans are their biggest threat because some parts of bears are very expensive as medicine. That’s one of the reasons why bears are often killed. In addition, many habitats of bears are being destroyed as a result of human activities, so bears are losing their homes. To save bears, I think more reserves for bears should be set up so that they can live freely there. Laws should be passed to prevent people from killing bears. Please give a hand to the endangered bears. They need help to survive.
