D Most Chinese people these days know what it is like to have an “English teacher”, since almost all pupils study English from their third year. Usually that first English teacher will be a young and lovely lady in primary school. But my first English teacher is no other than my father. Looking back, I can see that, when I was only a little girl, he created an English environment by providing me with flashcards（识字 卡），fun English- language toys and even dolls which can sing English songs! My interest in English had certainly been awakened（唤起） when I began to learn English at school. Just imagine, he went a step further and asked me to learn New Concept English by myself! I was confused and even angry. I could not understand why a father could be so strict with his little girl. All the same, he never gave up and he gently insisted that I follow through with his idea. At first, I read stories with tears and I actually hated them because they were too difficult for me. In the end, I came to love the funny stories and, to be honest, my father was always there with a helping hand. I am sure that my English would never have got so far without his support. And that’s why my father is not only my first English teacher but also my lifelong teacher. W：Sounds like fun. M：You’ll have to buy your own ticket, though. W：Are you running out of money again? Let me treat you. M：Wow! When did you get so much money? W：You know, It’s a waitress at the Student Center. Anyway, now that final exams are almost over, I’d love a night out. M：Since you’ve been so great about buying the tickets, why don’t take us out to dinner? W：You’ve got a deal. Let’s buy the tickets now. （Text8） W：Did you watch television last night, Charles? M：Yes, I did. Was there anything that interested you, Laura? W：There was a good game. Did you see it?
M：Oh, I didn’t. I wanted to, but my wife preferred to see the old film. W：What a pity! It was quite exciting. Both teams played very well. M：How did it finish? W：It finished in a draw. What was the film like? M：It was quite good. But I missed the beginning of it because I had to eat first. W：Did your wife enjoy it? M：No, she didn’t. After half an hour she stopped watching and started to read a book. （Text 9） M：Isn’t that far away? W：Not really. If you take the No.3 bus, you can get there in ten minutes. And if volleyball doesn’t interest you, they’ve got a huge indoor swimming pool a weight room, and indoor tracks. It’s a great place to meet people. M：Now that you mentioned it, it would be nice to get away from the computer center for a change, and I really should get some more exercise. Working up a sweat in a ball game or the weight room would be nice. I’ve got so fat. W：Look at me---You’re not the only one. In high school I had a lot more time to do sports activities. Now what little spare time you have must be used in doing exercise. At least the club is open until 12 p.m. M：I guess it’s worth a visit. Did you say you’re going tomorrow night? W：Yeah. M：OK, I’ll come, too. How about meeting me in front of the cinema at eight, and we’ll catch the bus there. W：Sure, see you then. （Text 10）
