A Number 59 was my favorite kitchen ever. Whenever I opened the door,I didn’t go in there to cook. I just wanted to be there; a fireplace, a table, and some soft armchairs invited me in, and the warm comfort asked me to stay. I can feel the kitchen as I write this, and remember the shape of the chair that I always sat in----if Sally didn’t get to it first. I think it was actually hers, which she just allowed me to borrow when she went outside. My auntie cooked and baked all the time, and the kitchen to me was the best room in the house. We would wander in after work, grab a chocolate biscuit, settle down in a chair, and tell her about our day. Like many mothers, she had learned to let us talk, figuring out our own answers by the time we reached the end of the story. Sometimes, there were no words, just a cup of tea, or a nod of the head. It was a safe place to go to; a problem-solving kitchen. On Saturday mornings my uncle loved to cook. After walking Sally, he would make us the most delicious hot sandwiches, and we would just sit and eat in silence. It wasn’t a fancy kitchen, but I know that it was a true gathering room, a magical place that made you feel warm and welcome, where the people in it were far more important than the things. 21.Sally is probably the name of _____ . A. She always talks much. B. She told the kids lots of stories. C. She was very strict with the author. D. She was hard-working and considerate. 24. What is the author’s purpose of writing the text? A. To show her love for cooking. B. To describe an old kitchen to us. C. To describe her experience in cooking. D. To look back on the happy moments in the kitchen.

C Most children are a little frightened by golden eagles. However, Kazakh boys in western Mongolia start learning how to use the huge birds to hunt foxes and hares at the age of 13. Photographer and travel writer Asher Svidensky shot five boys learning the skill as well as the girl Ashol-Pan. “To see her with the eagle was amazing,” he recalls. “She was a lot more comfortable with it, a lot more powerful with it and a lot more at ease with it.” In winter, a hunt begins with days of traveling on horseback through snow to a mountain giving an excellent view of prey for miles around. After a fox is spotted, riders frightened it into running into the open, and an eagle is released. If the eagle fails to make a kill, another is released. After years of service, on a spring morning, a hunter releases his mature eagle the final time, leaving a dead sheep on the mountain as a saying goodbye present. That’s how the Kazakh eagle hunters make sure that the eagles go back to nature and have their own strong newborns, for the sake of future generations. Svidensky’s photographs of Ashol-Pan’s joining in what has been a male activity for around 2,000 years say something about Mongolia in the 21st century. “The generation that will decide what will happen to every tradition in Mongolia is this generation,” says Svidensky. 28. What makes Asher Svensky most surprise? A. The colorful and powerful eagles. B. The special way of Kazakh hunting. C. The young age of Kazakh eagle hunters. D. The wonderful performance of Ashol-Pan. 29. What does the underlined word “prey” in Paragraph 2 mean? A. The animal to be caught. B. The opinion to be shared. C. The future to be expected. D. The scenery to be enjoyed. 30. Why is a special ceremony held for the mature eagle? A. To thank the eagle for its years of service. B. To prove that behind bad luck comes good luck. C. To show the hunter is unwilling to set it free. D. To hope the eagle will give birth to more young babies. 31. Which of the following can best describe the passage? A. Men in western Mongolia can conquer eagles. B. Eagles are good at hunting animals. C. An introduction of hunting with eagles in western Mongolia. D. The eagles may die in hunting.
D There is an old Chinese tale. A farmer living in a small village started to plant bamboo instead of traditional crops like corn and wheat as others. He thought he was making the wisest choice. Upon telling his fellow farmers his idea, they made fun of him, calling him a fool. However, the farmer remained unshaken. If you know anything about bamboo, you know that the first year after it has been planted, nothing will happen. His neighbors laughed at him. They had harvested their crops while he had nothing at all to show, but he was confident in his decision. The second year nothing happened either, not a sign of the bamboo. And a third year and a fourth year... One day,he saw some bamboo shoots(芽). By the end of the fifth summer, he had a bamboo forest. He harvested his bamboo and made a huge profit. His neighbors couldn’t believe the news. It looked as if it happened overnight. The bamboo was silently growing underground, developing a root system strong enough to support its potential for outward growth in the fifth year and beyond. Had the bamboo not developed a strong unseen foundation, it could not make its life continue. Had the farmer not stuck to his faith, the bamboo would have died without ever seeing the sun’s love. Have a goal and take action to achieve the goal no matter how long it will take. 32. How did other farmers react after hearing about the farmer’s decision? A. They showed great interest. B. They encouraged him greatly. C. They felt ashamed of themselves. D. They considered him to be a fool. 33. How did the farmer’s neighbors feel when they heard he had made a huge profit? A. Surprised. What’s the writer’s purpose in writing the story? A. To explain why some people succeed while some fail. B. To encourage us not to give up on the way to success. C. To advise us to find better ways to become successful. D. To prove that everyone can succeed if he plants bamboo.
