When someone says “Well, I guess I’ll have to face the music”, it doesn’t mean that he is planning to go to hear a singer. It is something far less happy, as you are called in by your boss to explain why you did this and did that or why you did not do this or that. At some time or another, every one of us has to “face the music”, especially as children. We can all remember father’s angry word “I want to talk to you”. And it was only because we did not listen to him. What a bad thing it was! In the middle or at the end of every term, we students have to “face the music”. The result of the exam will decide whether we will face the music or not. If-----that means parents’ cold faces and contempt(鄙视) of the teachers and classmates. “To face the music” is well known to every American, young or old. It is at least 100 years old. It really means that you have to do something, no matter how terrible the whole thing might be, because you know you have no choice. 56. If you didn’t listen to your father’s words, you would “face the music” or _____. A. do something to please him B do something to make him angry C. be punished by him D. be pleased with him 57. bottom of my stomach. Has something changed? Do all my friends still feel the same way? What clothes should I wear today? Everyone will wear something new, I am sure of that. My biggest conflict (冲突) is in my head. Part of me says, “Be your own person!” Another part of me just wants to fit into the crowd. My mom says that high school is like this, but college will be the opposite. That I will meet many people with different interests, and find groups that I want to be with. I am looking forward to that freedom, but I have one more year of high school and this is my reality right now. As much as my friends and I like to think we are above all the peer pressures (同侪压力) and social “rules” of our school, we all know we are very much controlled by it. We wear our hair the same way, wear the same brand clothes, and even have to use the same perfume (香水). We basically clone (复制) ourselves because we don’t want to be different. Yet, deep down we would like to shout, “Look at me! This is who I am! Sigh, there goes the alarm again. What should I wear today? I think I will call Clara and see what she is wearing. 60. Some British sociologists recently studied the typical British Sunday. They found that people get up later and do less housework than they did 40 years ago. They are far more likely to be out shopping or enjoying themselves than cooking Sunday lunch. Sunday mornings were busy 40 years ago. Most women caught up on their weekly housework and cooked a nice lunch. They seldom allowed themselves any “leisure” until afternoon, after the dishes were cleaned. Then there would be another rush to the table between 5:00 pm and 6:00 pm for tea. But now, Britons (英国人) can have brunch (早午餐) at the restaurant. Fewer people bother to cook themselves. “You only have two free days a week. You don’t want to have to waste one because there is nothing to do but watch boring TV,” said Elizabeth Biggs, 25, a producer in London. “On Saturday you are recovering from the week,” Biggs added. “Sundays are the last chance for the weekend — you want to get as much as you can out of the day before you have to go back to work.” In the past, British women usually did their shopping during the week, while the husband was at work. “Now men seem to do that as much as women,” said Jonathan Gershuny, a professor who took part in the study. Men also do more housework now on Sundays. Back in the 1960s, men were far more likely to spend Sundays out of the house — at the pub or playing football — before lunch. 64. Many Britons have brunch at the restaurant because ____. A. They have no time to cook at home. B. They get up too late. C. They won’t bother to cook themselves. D. They will go to church. 65. Which of the following is NOT true? A. Britons used to go to church on Sundays. B. Britons usually had a big lunch at home. C. British women did their shopping on Sundays in the past. D. British men did little housework at home in the past. 66. The underlined word “leisure” in Para 3 means ____. A. housework B. shopping C. lunch D. free time 67. What can we infer from the passage? A. Men do more housework on Sundays. B. Sundays in Britain might be very boring in the past. C. No people go to church on Sundays now. D. Britons all go out on Sundays.
