It does not have to be January 1st to give yourself a chance to make the most out of your day. Every day is a new day and a fresh start to learn, grow, develop your strengths, free yourself from past regrets or hurts, and move forward older and wiser. Every day gives you a chance to reinvent (重新审视) yourself. It is never too late to change things that are not working in your life. Each day is a new beginning and a piece of blank paper. How would you like to create your day? What would you like to paint on it? If you wake up in a negative mind, you are more likely to paint a dark picture throughout the day, and your picture will not show hope, happiness and joy. If you take each day to think actively, and have a positive intention for how you would like to create your day, how would your life be different? What can daily positive intentions do for you? Every day you will give yourself the gift of an “attitude of gratitude (感恩)”.
Each day is a chance to look at things in a different way. You can experience each day in the beauty of the world — and the beauty of you who are in it! You find yourself changing from “I can't” to “I can”. With a focus on positive intentions, you f eel you are full of power and more like a “winner” than a “loser”. You pay more attention to the present, and will be more likely to live fully in the present each moment of each day. After all, the past is a great place to visit, but you don't want to live there! So how about starting each day taking a moment to think of a positive intention for the day? 21．The first paragraph mainly tells us ________. A. learning is helpful in reinventing ourselves B. January 1st is the most important day C. we should make every day a new start D. we needn't change ourselves at all 22．If you have daily positive intentions, you will ________. A. have a busy life C. get gifts from others B. get a positive result D. be a complete loser
23．From the passage we can learn that ________. A. positive intentions for each day are of great help B. think actively and you will be a winner, not a loser C. the present is not where you should live for ever D. past regrets or hurts can make you older and wiser
B Everywhere I look outside my home I see people busy on their high-tech devices, while driving, walking, shopping, even sitting in toilets. People have been influenced to become technology addicted. One study found that people had a harder time resisting the allure of social media than they did for sleep, cigarettes and alcohol. The main goal of technology companies is to get people to spend more money and time on their products, not to actually improve our quality of life. They have successfully created a cultural
disease. Consumers willingly give up their freedom, money and time to catch up on the latest information, to keep pace with their peers or to appear modern. I see people trapped in a pathological（病态的）relationship with time-sucking technology, where they serve technology more than technology serves them. I call this technology servitude. I am referring to a loss of personal freedom and independence because of uncontrolled consumption of many kinds of devices that eat up time and money. What is a healthy use of technology devices? That is the vital question. Who is really in charge of my life? That is what people need to ask themselves if we are to have any chance of breaking up false beliefs about their use of technology. When we can live happily without using so much technology for a day or a week, then we can regain control and personal freedom, become the master of technology and discover what there is to enjoy in life free of technology. Mae West is famous for proclaiming(声明) the wisdom that “too much of a good thing is wonderful.” But it’s time to discover that it does not work for technology. Richard Fernandez, an executive coach at Google acknowledged that “we can be swept away by our technologies.” To break the grand digital connection, people must consider how life long ago could be fantastic without today’s overused technology. 24. The underlined word “allure” in Paragraph 2 probably means ______. A. advantage B. adaption C. attraction D. attempt
25. From the passage, technology companies aim to ______. A. deal with cultural diseases C. improve people’s quality of life B. provide the latest information D. attract people to buy their products
26. It can be inferred from this passage that people ______. A. consider too much technology wonderful B. may enjoy life better without overused technology C. can regain freedom without high-tech devices D. have realized the harm of high-tech devices 27. What’s the author’s attitude towards the overusing of high-tech devices? A. Disapproving. B. Sceptical. C. Neutral. D. Sympathetic.
My family has a tradition of holding garage sales (旧货出售). On a Saturday afternoon back in 2002, just when my aunt Lorraine was starting to pack up, I discovered my very own treasure — a pair of black boots. Although they weren’t anything fashionable, they caught my eye. Plus they were only two dollars. She noticed me eyeing them up and said I could have them for fifty cents. Even better! I thought to myself as I pulled them on. They were the perfect fit. When I handed over the money little did I know that these boots would accompany me on some of my greatest adventures. Each year I make a journey overseas and that year, I was making arrangements to visit Helsinki (the capital of Finland), so naturally, I packed the boots. It was winter, but the boots protected my feet from the cold weather. I wore them everywhere. The boots even accompanied me as I walked through the night to find live music. I felt right at home among old friends. In 2009, I went to Aunt Lorraine’s home to attend my cousin Jason’s birthday party. While we were talking, Jason stared at my boots. He asked, “Where did you get those boots?” “I bought them at your family’s garage sale,” I responded. Jason flew into a rage. “Mum! You sold my boots? I bought them in Milan and I’ve worn them through New York, London, Berlin and Paris,” he shouted. After a silence, however, he laughed and said, “Thanks a lot, Mum!” We spent the rest of the evening sharing memories of the journeys we’d both had wearing the same pair of boots. The boots are no longer fit for wear, but I have held on to them as a memento (纪念物) of the last decade, the places we have walked and the memories we now share. 28. 30. Jason said thanks to his mother because_______. What would be the best title for the text? A. Sweet memories. C. A family tradition. B. My beloved boots. D. My great adventures.
D Students from Florida International University in Miami walked on water Thursday for a class assignment. To do it, they wore aquatic (水上的）shoes they designed and created. Alex Quinones was the first to make it to the other side of a 175-foot lake on campus in record time—just over a minute. Quinones, who wore oversized boat-like shoes， also won last year and will receive $ 500. Students had to wear the aquatic shoes and make it across the lake in order to earn an “A” on the assignment for Architecture Professor Jaime Canaves, Materials and Methods Construction Class. “It's traditional in a school of architecture to do boats out of cardboard for a boat race. I thought our students were a little bit more spe cial than that,” Canaves said. “We decided to do the walk on water event to take it to the next level.” A total of 79 students competed in the race this year in 41 teams. Only 10 teams failed to cross the lake. Others who fell got back up and made it to the end. The race is open to all students and anyone in the community. The youngest person to ever participate was a 9-year-old girl who competed in place of her mother, while the oldest was a 67-year-old female. A large crowd on campus joined Canaves as he cheered on the racers. He shouted encouraging words, but also laughed as some unsteadily made their way to the end. “A part of this is for them to have more understanding of designing and make it work better,” he said. It is also a lesson in life for the students.
“Anything, including walking on water, is possible, if you do the research ，test it and go through the design process seriously.” 32. For what purpose did the students take part in the race? A. To go across the lake to school. B. To pass Professor Canaves’ class. C. To test their balance on the water. D. To win the prize money of $ 500. 33. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage? A. Most students finished the class assignment successfully. B. The students who fell into the water were criticized seriously by the Professor. C. The students wore shoes distributed by Professor Canaves to walk across the lake. D. The students took part in the race to challenge their physical abilities. 34. What can we infer from the passage? A. Alex Quinones is a top student in the university. B. It’s a custom for the people in the community to get involved in student activities. C. The student who made it to the end in the race would succeed in their professional career. D. Professor Canaves attaches importance to hands-on learning experience. 35. The purpose of the passage is to ___________. A. show his approval of the unique teaching style B. inspire teachers to be more creative C. report an interesting assignment D. encourage more people to take part in the race
