Criticism from coaches, parents, and other teammates, as well as pressure to win can create an excessive amount of anxiety or stress for young athletes. Stress can be physical, emotional, or psychological and research has indicated that it can lead to burnout. Burnout has been described as dropping or quitting of an activity that was at one time enjoyable. The early years of development are critical years for learning about oneself. The sport setting is one where valuable experiences can take place. Young athletes can, for example, learn how to cooperate with others, make friends, and gain other social skills that will be used throughout their lives. Coaches and parents should be aware, at all times, that their feedback to youngsters can greatly affect their children. Youngsters may take their parents' and coaches' criticisms to heart and find a flaw(缺陷)in themselves. Coaches and parents should also be cautious that youth sport participation does not become work for children. The outcome of the game should not be more important than the process of learning the sport and other life lessons. In today's youth sport setting, young athletes may be worrying more about who will win instead of enjoying themselves and the sport. Following a game, many parents and coaches focus on the outcome and find fault with youngsters' performances. Positive reinforcement should be provided regardless of the outcome. Research indicates that positive reinforcement motivates and has a greater effect on learning than criticism. Again, criticism can create high levels of stress, which can lead to burnout. 1.An effective way to prevent the burnout of young athletes is to________. A.reduce their mental stress B.increase their sense of success C.make sports less competitive D.make sports more challenging 答案:A 细节理解题。 2.According to the passage, sport is positive for young people in that________. A.it can help them learn more about society B.it enables them to find flaws in themselves C.it can provide them with valuable experiences D.it teaches them how to set realistic goals for themselves 答案:C 推理判断题。 3.Many coaches and parents are in the habit of criticizing young athletes________.

A.believing that criticism is beneficial for their early development B.without realizing criticism may destroy their selfconfidence C.in order to make them remember life's lessons D.so as to put more pressure on them 答案:B 推理判断题。 4.The author's purpose in writing the passage is to________. A.teach young athletes how to avoid burnout B.persuade young children not to worry about criticism C.stress the importance of positive reinforcement(支持;支援)to children D.discuss the skill of combining criticism with encouragement 答案:C 主旨大意题。 B People believe that climbing can do good to health. Where can you learn the skill of climbing then? If you think that you have to go to the mountains to learn how to climb, you're wrong. Many Americans are learning to climb in city gyms(体育馆). Here, people are learning on The climbing wall goes straight up and small holding places for hands and feet. How do people climb the wall? To climb, you need special shoes and safetybelt(保护 带)around your chest to hold you. There are ropes(绳索)tied to your harness. The ropes hold you in place so that you don't fall. A beginner's wall is usually about 15 feet high, and you climb straight up. There are small pieces of metal that stick out for you to stand on and hold on to. Sometimes it's easy to see the new piece of metal. Sometimes, it's not. The most difficult is to control your fear. It's normal for humans to be afraid of falling, so it's difficult not to feel fear. But when you move away from the wall, the harness and the ropes hold you, and you begin to feel safe. You move slowly until you reach the top. Climbing attracts people because it's good exercise for almost everyone. You use your whole body, especially your arms and legs. This sport gives your body a complete workout. When you climb, both your mind and your body can become stronger. 5.What can we infer from the passage? D 项错误, 依据为第二段中“sometimes it's easy to see the new pieces of metal. Sometimes it's not.” 6.The most difficult thing to do in wall climbing is________. A.to tie ropes to your harness B.to control your fear C.to move away from the wall D.to climb straight up 答案: B 细节推断题。 由第二段第九句中的“The most difficult...so it's difficult not to feel fear.” 7.The word “workout” underlined in the last paragraph most probably means________. A.settlement C.excitement 答案:B B.exercise D.tiredness

C.To encourage people to climb mountains. D.introduce the sport of wall climbing. For over one hundred and fifty years, Americans of all social classes have worn blue jeans. __1__Whether they are worn for work or for fashion today.
