First of all, students can grasp knowledge more deeply in a classroom where they take an active part in the discussion. And then the students are able to comprehend the materials and it paves the way for their later studies. Secondly, the students can also learn from their classmates during the discussion. This provides them with favorable circumstances to develop their communication skills. Furthermore, they have the chance to express themselves in front of others. All in all, students can both master the lesson efficiently and gain valuable abilities through discussion. writing to apply for a job as a

2012 年全国中学生英语能力竞赛(NEPCS)初赛 高一年级组试题听力部分(录音原文)
I. Responses Listen to the following five sentences and choose the best response to each one. Each sentence will be read only once. 1. Excuse me, could you pass me the white paper behind you? 2. What does your father do in his company? 3. Why not join us and go to the summer camp this weekend? 4. How often do you have a piano lesson? 5. Which city held the 2012 Olympic Games? II. Dialogues A) Listen to the following five mini-dialogues. Each dialogue is followed by a question. Choose the best answer or picture for each question. Each dialogue and q uestion will b e read twice. 6. W: Which bus do I need, Tom? M: Sorry, Lily. I’ve got no idea. You’d better ask Jack. Q: Who needs to take a bus? 7. M: When is your birthday, Wu Ting? W: Guess! I was born on National Day of China. Q: When was Wu Ting born? 8. W: Hello, Jim! We’re going to the farm to pick strawberries next week. M: Great! I’ve never been there before. W: Would you like to go there with us? M: Sure! Q: What are they going to do on the farm? 9. M: What programme was on CCTV 1 at seven last night? W: CCTV News. M: And how long did it last? W: From 7:00 to 7:45. Q: How long did the CCTV News last yesterday? 10. M: The world’s population grew very slowly several thousand years ago. W: How about the last three or four hundred years? M: It grew very quickly. Q: Did the world’s population grow slowly or quickly during the last three or four hundred years? B) Listen to the following dialogue and choose the b est answer to each q uestion. Each dialogue will be read twice. M: Kate, do you know it’s Linda’s birthday next week? W: No, I don’t. Jim, you’re her best friend. You should know what day her birthday is. -3-

M: Yeah, of course, it’s on Tuesday. It’s the 27th of June. W: How old will she be? M: She will be twelve. I want to give her a present, but I don’t know what to get her. Can you help me decide? W: What does she like doing? M: She likes reading. W: Why don’t you get her a book? M: She already has got a lot of books. I want to get her something different. W: What else does she like doing? M: She likes listening to popular music. W: How about getting her a CD? M: That’s too expensive. I couldn’t afford to get her a CD. W: Then I know what you should get her as a present. A magazine about popular music. She’ll be pleased to read about her favourite things. M: That’s a great idea! Thanks, Kate. C) Listen to the following dialogue and match the information in the two columns. Each dialogue will b e read twice. W: Hi Daniel. Have you got five minutes to spare? M: Yes, sure. W: OK, I want to tell you about your personality. M: Oh, great! I love doing this kind of thing. W: OK, there are three main things to look at. M: What are they? W: First, there’s the length of your fingers. People with long, slim fingers are quite quiet. People with shorter, thicker fingers, like yours, are more open. They talk about their feelings more. M: Oh, I really enjoy talking about my feelings. I’m very open. This is great! What else? W: Well, secondly, there’s the shape of your fingers. Are your fingers straight? M: They seem to be fairly straight. W: Umm... that means you’re organised and honest. Is that true? M: Yes. I really think that’s true about me. W: Finally, the thumb is very important. Let’s see if your thumb bends back easily. M: What? Like this? W: Yes... mmm... yours bends quite a lot which means you like talking—you’re chatty. M: I love talking! W: Yes, I know. If it doesn’t bend back it means you’re more reserved—you avoid telling people about your feelings or problems. M: That’s not me. W: And a long thumb means you’re ambitious. You’ve got quite a long thumb so I guess you’re quite ambitious. M: That’s right! Come on! Let me look at your fingers... III. Passages A) Listen to the following material and choose the best answer to each question. The material will be read twice. M: Welcome to This is Your Life. Our celebrity this week is the world-famous hero of the James Bond films. He was born in Ireland in 1953 but he has lived in California for over 15 years. He is married to Keely, and they have two sons. He is one of the most popular James Bonds ever. He is... Pierce Brosnan. -4Pierce Brosnan is happy now but things used to be much different. When he was only a baby, his father left

and his mother moved to London. He lived with his grandparents until he was six. He left school when he was 16 and took various jobs to earn money, including washing dishes and driving a cab. For a while he was even a fireeater in a circus. Though he looks cool now, at that time he had long hair and a beard. Brosnan has been an actor since the age of 21. He finally found success in 1980 with the TV series Remington Steele. He was 27 years old. In 1995 he starred as James Bond in Golden Eye. The film was an instant hit and took $ 350 million at the box office—the biggest Bond film ever. But at home, Brosnan is a different man. His favourite hobbies are fishing and painting. B) Listen to the following material and fill in each blank with one word. The material will be read twice. The most important thing to remember if you can’t get out of your home because of a fire is to keep calm. If you keep calm, you can save your energy—and you can use this energy to help you survive. If you’re prevented from getting out of your home or a building because of flames or smoke, close the door—the door nearest to the fireand use towels or sheets to block any gaps. If you put towels at the bottom of the door, this will help stop smoke spreading into the room. After that, go to the window. Get down to floor level if the room becomes smoky. It’s easier to breathe down there because the smoke will rise upwards. When you get to the window, try to open it and to call out to people outside. They can call the fire brigade. Y ou should just wait for the fire brigade—they should arrive in a short time. On the other hand, if you’re in immediate danger, you should think about getting out of the window, if your position is lower than 15 feet high. So drop something soft—if they’re in the room with you—to the ground to break your fall from the window. Get out of the window with your feet first and lower yourself to the full length of your arms before dropping.
