White had two reasons for making this epic journey. First of all, he wanted to use the trip to raise money for charity, which he did. He raised about 70,000 for the British charity, Oxfam. White's second reason for making the trip was to break the world record and become the fastest person to cycle around the world. He is still waiting to find out if he has broken the record or not. White set off from Trafalgar Square, in London, on 19th June 2004 and was back 299 days later. He spent more than l,300 hours in the saddle(车座) and destroyed four sets of tyres and three bike chains. He had the adventure of his life crossing Europe, the Middle East, India, Asia, Australia, New Zealand and the Americas. Amazingly, he did all of this with absolutely no support team. No jeep carrying food, water and medicine. No doctor. Nothing! Just a bike and a very, very long road. The journey was lonely and desperate at times. He also had to fight his way across deserts, through jungles and over mountains. He cycled through heavy rains and temperatures of up to 45 degrees, all to help people in need. There were other dangers along the road. In Iran, he was chased by armed robbers and was lucky to escape with his life and the little money he had. The worst thing that happened to him was having to cycle into a headwind on a road that crosses the south of Australia. For l,000 kilometers he battled against the wind that was constantly pushing him. This part of the trip was slow, hard work and depressing, but he made it in the end. Now Mr.White is back and intends to write a book about his adventures. 56. When Phil White returned from his trip, he _______. A. collected money for Oxfam B. broke the world record C. destroyed several bikes D. traveled about l,300 hours 57. What does the underlined word "epic" in Paragraph l most probably mean? A. Very slow but exciting. B. Very smooth but tiring.

C. Very long and difficult. D. Very lonely and depressing. 58. During his journey around the world, Phil White _________. . A. fought heroically against robbers in Iran B. managed to ride against the wind in Australia C. experienced the extremes of heat and cold D. had a team of people who traveled with him 59. Which of the following words can best describe Phil White? A. Imaginative. B. Friendly. C. Modest. D. Determined. (B) Why is pink or purple a color for girls and blue or brown for boys? The answer depends largely on cultural values as well as personal experiences. To the Egyptians, green was a color that represented the hope and joy of spring, while for Muslims, it means heaven. Red is a symbol of good luck in many cultures. In China, children are given money in a red envelope to bring good fortune in the New Year. For many nations, blue is a symbol of protection and religious beliefs. Greek people often wear a blue necklace hoping to protect themselves against evils(灾祸). People’s choice of colors is also influenced by their bodies’ reactions (反应) toward them. Green is said to be the most restful color. It has the ability to reduce pain and relax people both mentally and physically. People who work in green environment have been found to have fewer stomach aches. Red can cause a person’s blood pressure to rise and increase people’s appetites (食欲). Many decorators will include different shades of red in the restaurant. Similarly, many commercial websites will have a red “Buy Now” button because red is a color that easily catches a person’s eye. Blue is another calming color. Unlike red, blue can cause people to lose appetite. So if you want to eat less, some suggest that eating from blue plates can help. The next time you are deciding on what to wear or what color to decorate your room, think about the color carefully. 60. Muslims regard green as a symbol of heaven mainly because of their . A. commercial purposes B. cultural values C. personal experiences D. physical reactions to the color 61. Why will many commercial websites have a red “Buy Now” button? A. To relax people physically. B. To increase people’s appetites. C. To encourage people to make a purchase. D. To cause a person’s blood pressure to rise. 62. What color might help lose weight according to the text? A. Blue B. Green. C. Red. D. Purple. 63. Which of the following would be the most proper title for the text? A. Colors and Human Beings B. The Cultural Meaning of Color C. Colors and Personal Experiences D. The Meaning and Function of Color

(C) HERE has been a flood of news lately about bad behavior of Chinese tourists abroad. They've been criticized(批评)for being rude, loud, poor tippers and generally unpleasant. Most of the criticism, it seems, comes from other Chinese who are embarrassed by the behavior of their countrymen. Some call it uncivilized behavior. I disagree. If a Chinese person disturbs a restaurant by talking too loudly, it doesn't mean he's uncivilized. It means he talks too loudly, nothing more. If a Chinese fails to leave a tip it means there is no tipping in China and the practice is unfamiliar to the tourist. Yong Chen, tourism researcher at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, said most “bad” tourists don't intend to be “bad.” They are just being themselves. He went on to point out that their knowledge of the destination country and its culture is often out-of-dated or completely doesn’t exist. By now, most people have heard the story of the 15-year-old Chinese boy who scratched (乱写)his name onto a 3,500-year-old temple in Egypt’s Luxor. But it hardly means that all Chinese are anxious to damage ancient relics. It’s nothing more than poor behavior by an individual. But recently people talk about an American tourist who broke a finger off a 600-year-old statue in Florence, Italy. Does that mean all American tourists are uncivilized? Of course not. All it means is this one guy was a poor representative of his country. Bad behavior involving Chinese tourists doesn't all go one way. In the news recently was a story of some Chinese who were shaken down for money in Cambodia. There was another story of a Chinese student being charged more than US$4,000 for a taxi ride in Chicago. And there are always a few stories of Chinese tourists or students being crime victims(受害者). Most people who work in the tourism industry understand that all people are not alike, and don’t expect everyone to act the same. They realize the best way to end bad Chinese behavior is for more Chinese to travel. While traveling, Chinese tourists learn how to absorb local culture in the process of traveling, and get rid of their bad tourist behavior. 64. According to paragraph 2, some Chinese tourists have uncivilized behavior because they . A. don’t have much money with them B. haven’t got a better education C. have different cultures and customs D. don't enjoy the journey at all 65. Passage 4 and 5 are mainly to show that___________. A. parents are to blame for their children’s bad behavior B. examples of poor behavior can be found everywhere C. the American broke a finger off statue on purpose D. there are enough places of interest for people to visit 66. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage? A. Foreigners don’t mind Chinese tourists’ behavior.

B. Yong Chen is not in favor of the author’s opinion. C. A tourist represents his country while traveling. D. Traveling is a learning experience for tourists. 67. (E) You’ve just come home, after living abroad for a few years. Since you’ve been away, has this country changed for the better—or for the worse? If you’ve just arrived back in the UK after a fortnight’s holiday, small changes have probably surprised you—anything from a local greengrocer suddenly being replaced by a mobile-phone shop to someone in your street moving house. So how have things changed to people coming back to Britain after seven, ten or even 15 years living abroad? What changes in society can they see that the rest of us have hardly noticed—or now take for granted? To find out, we asked some people who recently returned. Debi: When we left, Cheltenham, my home town, was a town of white, middle-class families—all very conservative ( 保守的 ). The town is now home to many eastern Europeans and lots of Australians, who come here mainly to work in hotels and tourism. There are even several shops only for foreigners. Having been an immigrant (移民) myself, I admire people who go overseas to find a job. Maybe if I lived in an inner city where unemployment was high, I’d think differently, but I believe foreign settlers have improved this country because they’re more open-minded and often work harder than the natives. Christine: As we flew home over Britain, both of us remarked how green everything looked. But the differences between the place we’d left behind and the one we returned to were brought sharply into focus as soon as we landed. To see policemen with guns in the airport for the first time was frightening—in Cyprus, they’re very relaxed—and I got pulled over by customs officers just for taking a woolen sweater with some metal-made buttons out of my case in the arrivals hall. Everyone seemed to be on guard. Even the airport car-hire firm wanted a credit card rather than cash because they said their vehicles had been used by bank robbers. But anyway, this is still a green, beautiful country. I just wish more people would appreciate what they’ve got. 72. After a short overseas holiday, people tend to _______. A. notice small changes B. expect small changes C. welcome small changes D. exaggerate small changes 73. How does Debi look at the foreign settlers? A. Cautiously. B. Doubtfully. C. Positively. D. Critically. 74. When arriving at the airport in Britain, Christine was shocked by _______. A. the relaxed policemen B. the messy arrivals hall C. the bank robbers D. the tight security 75. Which might be the best title for the passage? A. Back in Britain. B. Life in Britain. C. Britain in Future. D. Britain in Memory.
