While waiting for a bus to the office where he was supposed to be interviewed , he saw an elderly man wildly kicking the tyre of his car. Obviously there was something wrong with the car. Jimmy immediately went up to lend him a hand . When Jimmy finished working on the car , the old man asked him how much he should pay for the service. Jimmy said there was no need to pay him; he just helped someone in need , and he had to rush for an interview. Then the old man said,”Well , I could take you to the office for your interview. It ’s the least I could do. Please , I insist.” Jimmy agreed. Upon arrival , Jimmy found a long line of applicants waiting to be interviewed. Jimmy still had some grease on him after the car repair , but he did not have much time to wash it off or have a change of shirt. Then the interviewer turned the chair and to Jimmy’s surprise , it was the old man he helped earlier this morning. It turned out he was the General Manager of the company. “Sorry , I had to keep you waiting , but I was pretty sure I made the right decision to have you as part of our workforce before you even stepped into this office. We never thought that we would fall in love with the Chinese eating habits and style. We also never imagined that we have lost 80 pounds . We thought that we should share some of our tricks with you. Here is the Chinese Diet--five easy things you can do to lose weight. Use a small bowl--much smaller Go into your cupboard and find your smallest bowl. Find a few dishes that your whole family loves and rotate(轮换） those. Cut down on your meat and dairy
We eat very little meat . So do most Chinese. We eat very little dairy, milk and yogurt. Use chopsticks to eat We love eating with chopsticks and wonder why we didn’t use them more at home. You eat a lot slower , A LOT. Introduce rice and noodles into your meals A Chinese diet includes a lot of rice and noodles. So our daily diet is no different , we eat rice and noodles 3 times a day. We wish we had known these simple tricks back home that make such a difference in our waistline. 9. According to the text , the author_________. At least it was back in 1992 when I traveled the country. Back then every one seemed to be riding a bicycle. Millions of them , all black. Cars were rare. Yet since my arrival in Beijing last year , I’ve found the opposite is true. There are millions of cars. However , people still use their bicycles to get around. For many , it’s the easiest and cheapest way to travel today. Bicycles also come in different colors---silver, green, red, blue, yellow, whatever you want. It’s fun watching people biking. They rush quickly through crossroads , move skillfully through traffic , and ride even on sidewalks. Bicycles allow people the freedom to move about that cars just can’t provide. Eager to be part of this aspect of Chinese culture , I decided to buy a bicycle. Great weather accompanied my great buy. I immediately jumped up on my bicycle seat and started home. My first ride home was orderly. To be safe , I stayed with a “pack” of bikers while cars on the streets came running swiftly out of nowhere at times. I didn’t want to get hit. So I took the ride carefully. Crossing the streets was the biggest problem. It was a lot like crossing a major highway back in the United States. The streets here were wide, so crossing took time , skill and a little bit of luck. I finally made it home. The feeling on the bicycle was amazing. The air hitting my face and going through my hair was wonderful. I was sitting on top of the world as I passed by places and people. Biking made me feel alive. 12. According to the author , why are bicycles still popular in China today?
A. Because they are traditional and safe. B. Because they are convenient and inexpensive. C. Because they are colorful and available. D. Because they are fast and environment friendly. 13.The author decided to buy a bicycle because he intended______. A. to ride it for fun B. to use it for transport C. to experience local culture D. to improve his riding skills 14.How did the author feel about his street crossing? A.It was boring. B. It was difficult C.It was lively. D. It was wonderful. 15.Which of the following best describes the author ’s biking experience? A. The author enjoyed showing off his biking skills. B. The author was annoyed by the air while riding. C. The author was praised by the other bikers. D. The author took great pleasure in biking. E George Gershwin , born in 1898 , was one of America’s greatest composers . He published his first song when he was eighteen years old. During the next twenty years he wrote more than five hundred songs. Many of Gershwin’s songs were first written for musical plays performed in theaters in New York City. These plays were a popular form of entertainment in the 1920sand 1930s. Many of his sons have remained popular as ever. Over the years they have been sung and played in every possible way--from jazz to country. In the 1920s there was a debate in the United States about jazz music. Could jazz, some people asked, be considered serious music? In 1924 jazz musician and orchestra leader Paul Whiteman decided to organize a special concert to show that jazz was serious music. Gershwin agreed to compose something for the concert before he realized he had just a few weeks to do it. And in that short time, he composed a piece for piano and orchestra which he called Rhapsody in Blue. Gershwin himself played the piano at the concert. The audience were thrilled when they heard his music. It made him world-famous and showed that jazz music could be both serious and popular. In 1928 , Gershwin went to Paris. He applied to study composition with the well-known musician Nadia Boulanger , but she rejected him. She was afraid that classical study would ruin his jazz-influenced style. While there, Gershwin wrote An American in Paris . When it was first performed , critics were divided over the music. Some called it happy and full of life, to others it was silly and boring. But it quickly became popular in Europe and the United States. It still remains one of his most famous works. Gershwin died in 1937 , just days after doctors learned he had brain cancer. He was only thirty-nine years old. Newspapers all over the world reported his death on their front pages. People mourned the loss of the man and all the music he might have still written. 16. Many of Gershwin’s musical works were__________. A. Written about New Yorkers B. Composed for Paul Whiteman

B.It proved jazz could be serious music. C. It made Gershwin leader of the orchestra. D.It caused a debate among jazz musicians. 18. What did Gershwin do during his stay in Paris? A. He created one of his best works. B. He studied with Nadia Boulanger. C. He argued with French critics. D. He changed his music style. 19. What do we learn from the last paragraph? A. Many of Gershwin’s works were lost . B. The death of Gershwin was widely reported. C. A concert was held in memory of Gershwin. D. Brain cancer research started after Gershwin’s deaths. 20. Which of the following best describes Gershwin? A. Talented and productive. B. Serious and boring. C. Popular and unhappy. D. It’s useful and necessary to discuss learning habits. As we all know, learning habits play a key role in our study. Only if we form a good learning habit, can we learn efficiently. Among learning habits, reviewing regularly is a most important one. If we go over our notes and textbook regularly, they will become more meaningful and be remembered easily. How should we do to develop such a good habit? I think making a practical plan and sticking to it will be of great help. In addition, I think it also important to turn to our teachers for advice. But there also exit many problems. For example, I can’t take down what the teachers say in class. To improve this situation, I decide to learn to take notes quickly and try to focus on the important points.
