World Reading Day and Reading 题四: During the early years of American settlement, a new form of English was beginning to develop in the islands of the West Indies and the southern part of the mainland, spoken by the incoming black population. The beginning of the seventeenth century saw the emergence of the slave trade. Ships from Europe traveled to the West African coast, where they exchanged cheap goods for black slaves. The slaves were shipped in terrible conditions to the Caribbean islands and the American coast, where they were in turn exchanged for such products as sugar and molasses. The ships then returned to England, completing an “Atlantic triangle” of journeys, and the process began again. Britain and the United States had outlawed the slave trade by 1865, but by that time, nearly 200 years of trading had taken place. By the middle of the nineteenth century, there were over four million black slaves in America.

The policy of the slave traders was to bring people of different language backgrounds together in the ships, to make it difficult for groups to plan rebellion. The result was the growth of several pidgin forms of communication, and in particular a pidgin between the slaves and the sailors, many of whom spoke English. Once arriving in the Caribbean, this pidgin English continued to act as a major means of communication between the black population and the new landowners, and among the blacks themselves. Then, when children came to be born, the pidgin became their mother tongue, thus producing the first black Creole speech in the region. This Creole English rapidly came to be used throughout the cotton plantations, and in the coastal towns and islands. Similarly, creolized forms of French, Spanish and Portuguese emerged in and around the Caribbean. 1. Which of the following shows the route of slave trade correctly? A. Europe → West African coast → the Caribbean islands and the American coast → Europe. B. Europe → West African coast → Europe → the Caribbean islands and the American coast. C. West African coast → Europe → the Caribbean islands and the American coast → Europe. D. West African coast → Europe → the Caribbean islands and the American coast → West African coast. 2. The underlined word “outlawed” (in Paragraph 1) means________. A. finished B. made something no longer legal C. blamed D. thought something wrong 3. It can be inferred that the slaves in the same ship________. A. didn’t communicate with each other B. could understand several languages C. spoke different languages D. came from the same place 4. Creole speech comes from ________. A. Spanish and English B. English and an African language C. a European language and American language D. an African language and an American language

题二: D; A; A 解析: 1. It is also the day to honor great writers, for example, William Shakespeare, born or dead on that day.(它也是纪念著名的像莎士比亚在那一天出生或者死亡的日子)可知。 2. 根据划线后的 does lots of reading every day though he is very busy(尽管他很忙但是每天还是进行大量的阅 读)可知是热爱阅读的人。 3. 根据最后两段中 Reading is also one of the most important ways to learn a foreign language like English 可知 A 是正确的; Reading gives us information about other cultures 可知 B 是正确的; other kinds of reading materials can help us to know more about the outside world 可知 D 是正确的。所以可知选 C(文章中没有提到) 。 4. 根据第一段就可以知道本文的主要内容就是讲 World Reading Day 以及阅读的好处。 题四: 1. A 解析: 2.B 3. C 4.B

2. A

3.C

4. D

1. 根据第一段的顺序可以知道从欧洲到达西非海岸,然后带着黑人到达加勒比岛,贸易之后回到英国。 2. Britain and the United States had outlawed the slave trade by 1865,句子意为:英国和美国到 1865 年都已经使 得奴隶贸易非法化,意思是使得奴隶贸易不再合法。 3. 根据第二段 The policy of the slave traders was to bring people of different language backgrounds together in the ships, to make it difficult for groups to plan rebellion (奴隶贸易的指导方针就是把不同语言背景的人们放在船 上,使得对于群体策划叛乱是困难的事) ,可知同一艘船的奴隶说不同的语言。 4. 这些奴隶原来来自非洲,所以说非洲语言,后来接触到英语,然后在生活中就形成另一种语言,即是英语 和非洲语言的综合。
